Charles Kelley is opening up about his time in rehab. The Lady A singer went to rehab in 2022, going directly from a vacation in Greece to get the help he needed. Charles is now opening up about his time in treatment, and his overwhelming fear that his alcoholism had already cost him everything.

“I went to treatment for a month in Utah, and I really didn’t know if I was ever going to be coming back home to my bed,” Charles tells People. “And that was tough. I’d written a lot of songs about heartbreak, but I don’t know if I ever really knew what heartbreak felt like until I was there and had that moment.”

It was Charles’ wife Cassie who told him he needed to get help, after he disappeared for a night of drinking while in a foreign country, with his phone off. Charles details his feelings in a song called “Can’t Lose You,” from his solo album, Songs For A New Moon, out now. Charles wrote the song with Lindsay Rimes, Michael Whitworth and Josh Kear.

“She’s the reason that I got sober,” Charles says of his wife. “She had so much grace for me and went along through the journey with me doing all the work, and I could go so far as to say there’s no way she would’ve stayed with me if I had not gotten sober.”

Fortunately, Charles found his marriage stronger than ever when he returned from rehab.

“When I finally came home [from rehab], we reconnected,” Charles says.

“She said, ‘I’m choosing to go on this journey with you, and we’re going to try to make this work.’ It was a complete 180 in our relationship,” he adds.

If not for his sobriety, Charles may have never been able to even create Songs For A New Moon, penning 14 of the 16 songs on the record.

“I wanted the music to reflect that feeling of gratitude and getting through the tough times together, because marriage is tough even when you’re not dealing with something like alcoholism,” Charles shares. “You go through waves, and we’ve been together for a long time. I don’t know. We’ve lived a lot of life. And so, it was nice to be able to have a record from top to bottom about that.”

Songs For A New Moon is the record Charles needed to make for himself, separate from his career with Lady A.

“I think music is such a cathartic outlet and basically, the music made me feel good,” Charles says. “I think over the last three years during this sobriety journey, I’ve just felt this little awakening, and I just wanted to make a happy record that spoke a little bit of this journey and this second chance at life that I feel like I’ve been given.”

Charles and Cassie are now better than ever. The couple, already parents to nine-year-old Ward, are expecting their second child, a boy, this fall.
