Sam Hunt seems almost certain to have another No. 1 hit on his hands, and soon. Hunt’s “Country House” single is in the Top 5, a song he wrote with Ross Copperman, Josh Osborne, and Michael Lotten for his Locked Up EP, out last year.
“When I started writing it, I thought about my little cabin in the woods where I have lived for several years now,” Hunt shares on Audacy. “We’re about to outgrow it.”
Hunt and his wife Hannah Lee Fowler are the parents of three children, including their newborn Weyman Allen Hunt, who arrived in May.
“[It’s] more of the lifestyle of just being married with kids, and out in the woods,” Hunt explains. “Raising the kids and just [being] content. So that was sort of the inspiration behind the song. It started with the title just ‘Country House.’ And a lot of songs start with just a phrase that I hear it, or I see it written down, and it just jumps out at me. Lke it sort of screams, ‘This is supposed to be a song that’s a part of your catalog.’ So let’s go.”
“Once I zero in on an idea like that, I’ll take the time to try to get the song right,” he adds. “And that’s kind of how this song came about.”
When announcing the release of “Country House,” the Georgia native said the song ties in his love of living in the South with his love of the English countryside, which is also reflected in where he currently lives.
“When I think ‘Country House,’ I think of the English countryside,” Hunt explains. “Obviously, I grew up in the South, but there is a strong connection between my Southern roots and the English countryside, so that country house feel. So, I took the ‘Country House’ idea and sprinkled some rural Southern American lingo over the top of it, or imagery, to make it my own or closer to my own experience.
“And also, I’m at a place in my life where I moved from the country off to the city to pursue my country music dreams,” he adds. “And I find myself feeling the pull back towards a simple life like the one that I grew up with, and especially hoping to give that experience to my kids, and this song captures that for me.”
Hunt’s own family, including his children, siblings and parents, all appear in the “Country House” video.
“That’s my mom, dad, brothers, all the little ones that are here so far,” Hunt tells Pure Country Radio. “It’s like the best little home video I’ll ever have. I talked to the guy that directed it. I was like, ‘I wanna get all the footage.’ We shoot all of that footage for three and a half minutes. He said, ‘Okay, I’m going to send it to you. It’s 11 and a half hours.’ … It was a special weekend. So we went back down South where I grew up. It was really a highlight of the year for me.”
