The Bacon Brothers are returning for a performance in Nashville, this time at the Polk Theater, as part of their Freestanding Tour. The duo, made up of siblings Michael and Kevin Bacon, will perform on Saturday, August 9 in the downtown Nashville venue.
Michael has a lengthy history in Nashville, dating back to 1972, when he married his wife, Betsy. The two loaded a U-Haul one day after they got married and relocated to Music City, so he could work as a staff writer at Combine Music. He also had a recording contract at Monument Records, keeping them in Nashville for a decade.
Performing together since 1997, when their first Forosoco album was released, both Michael and Kevin admit playing in Nashville is a unique experience, unlike anywhere else in the world.
“I remember first playing in Nashville, I was like, ‘Oh boy, here we go,'” Kevin recalls to Everything Nash. “And we did go down there, and one of our worst shows ever was one of our first shows we played in Nashville. It was kind of like introducing us to the town, and it turned into this horrible industry gig where basically people just drank and talked through the entire show. … People are screaming and having a conversation with each other. It’s just the worst feeling.”
Fortunately, following their disastrous debut, Nashville is now one of their favorite cities to perform in. After playing for several years at the historic Franklin Theatre, The Bacon Brothers will soon make their Polk Theater debut, located in the heart of the city.
“Now, I really like playing in Nashville,” Kevin says. “I think part of it is, having played the Franklin Theater so many times, you start to settle into the community, and people start to say, “Oh, well this is not a joke.”
The Bacon Brothers will return only a couple months after their Polk Theater show, this time to perform at the iconic Grand Ole Opry.

“I’m such a big country music fan,” Michael says. “And I have so much respect for the pure songwriter that still exists in Nashville. It’s intimidating, but we played there twice, and I can’t wait to get back there.”
Michael and Kevin are siblings, but they still had to work to form their cohesive sound.
“I came from being a classical musician and a folk musician, and then later on a rock musician,” Michael explains. “Kevin is a pure rock musician with some roots in folk music. … I think that the fact that, first of all, we’re very different, but we also have so many things that are aesthetic, is always kind of very connected. We do things really differently, and we bring to the band different musical aspects. But somehow, it’s 30 years. So the proof is in the pudding. We’ve somehow managed to keep it going, and I think it gets better every year.”
It’s been three decades that The Bacon Brothers have been making music, already crossing a lot of items off their bucket list. But not surprisingly, there is still a lot more they want to do.
“If you write songs then you want people to hear them,” Kevin reflects. “Of course the dream is always that there would be more and more people hearing something, that it would go across whatever the platforms are, or be covered by somebody that would put it in front of the ears of more people. The thing is that we just, we write songs. And whether they’re heard by any number of people that will come out to see them or by a lot more people, is always the dream, just for people to hear the songs.”
