Brett Young just took his latest hit single to The Kelly Clarkson Show. The father of two performed “Drink With You” on the the hit TV show. “Drink With You” is the debut single from his latest 2.0 album, out now.
Young wrote “Drink With You” with Jesse Frasure, Tony Lucca, and Emily Weisband. The song is part of Young’s fifth studio album, and the one he is most proud to have released.
“2.0 is a reflection of where I’m at right now as a husband, a dad, and someone who’s still learning and growing,” the father of two says. “These songs get into the highs and lows of love, the weight of heartbreak, and the responsibility and joy that come with family. It’s not just a follow-up to what I’ve done before. It’s a step forward. I hope people hear pieces of their own story in these songs, the way I see mine in them.”
The Story Behind “Drink With You” by Brett Young
“Drink With You” says in part, “Girl, I know the way this goes down / You slide on closer after every round. Won’t be long before the truth comes out We get to buzzing, our lips get to touching / With the whiskey and the way you tease / You’ll end up waking up next to me / And if that ain’t something you wanna do / I just can’t drink with you.” The song was written years ago, and included on 2.0, even though Young no longer imbibes, at all.
“I don’t even drink anymore,” Young tells American Songwriter. “Having (freshly written) songs about ex-girlfriends and drinking on a record when I’m married with children and don’t drink anymore wouldn’t be real. This was a creative way of going back and giving Brett 10 years ago to the fans that met Brett 10 years ago.”
When releasing “Drink With You,” Young said the song is a well-worn theme in country music, one that fortunately no longer applies to him. Young and his wife, Taylor, have been married since 2018.
“‘Drink With You’ is a song about exes that can’t seem to make good decisions when they get together and there is alcohol involved,” says Young. “It’s a story as old as time about how it’s sometimes easy to fall back into old habits rather than move on.”
Brett Young’s Decision To Stay Sober
Young decided to eliminate alcohol from his life, in order to be the best husband, father, and artist he could possibly be.
“There’s been a lot of changes in my life in terms of health and wellness and fitness over the last 18, 19 months that kind of have turned into this new 2.0 version of myself,” Young tells Muscle & Fitness. “Having young children at home, and starting to get older, you start to realize—with so much more knowledge about what is good and bad for you these days. I did a deep dive into how to become the best version of myself possible. That meant longevity and being around for my kids as long as possible.”
Not only did Young quit drinking, but he also began working harder on his physical health, including exercise and a healthy diet.
“January 8 was a very specific decision, because we were going on a ski trip before that,” Young recalls. “I went, ‘You know what? Let’s blow it out one more time and have a good time. But when we come home from the ski trip, I’m going to be all done. I’m gonna put my head down and focus on getting as healthy as I can and setting a good example for this family.’”
