Ella Langley Fought Her Record Label to Release ‘You Look Like You Love Me’ Her Way

Ella Langley had a massive hit with “You Look Like You Love Me.” A duet with Riley Green, the song is Langley’s debut single, on her freshman Hungover record. Written by Langley, Green, and Aaron Raitiere, “You Look Like You Love Me” became a multi-platinum No. 1 single, also winning Langley numerous awards, including CMA Awards for Musical Event of the Year and Song of the Year.

Langley’s instincts proved correct in “You Look Like You Love Me,” even if her record label disagreed.

“Everyone told me that song was not going to work. They were all like, ‘What?’” Langley says on This Past Weekend with Theo Von (via People). “After we cut it, [the label] was like, ‘We really think you need to go back in and sing these verses.’ I was like, ‘I’m not singing it.’ And they were like, ‘You need to sing it.’”

In “You Look Like You Love Me,” both she and Green speak the verses. It’s an idea her record label vehemently opposed. Fortunately, even though Langley was just getting started with her country music career, she refused to be swayed.

“I just fought them really hard on it,” Langley says. “They were like, ‘This is going to be the worst-performing song on the record.’”

Of course, “You Look Like You Love Me,” is the beginning of Langley’s superstar career. Although she could never have predicted how much “You Look Like You Love Me” would change everything for her, she did rightly predict the song would become a big hit.

“I didn’t know what it was gonna do, but I believed that it was different,” Langley boasts. “I believed it was something that made me smile, and I enjoyed singing it. And like I said, once I put my mind to something, if I go in and cut something, it’s because I believe in it.”

Ella Langley to Release 18-Track Sophomore ‘Dandelion’ Album

Langley’s winning streak is continuing with Dandelion, her 18-track sophomore album, out on April 10. The record includes “Choosin’ Texas,” a multi-week No. 1 hit, which just spent its fifth week in the No. 1 spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“I’m not guessing anymore. I’m not chasing anything. I’m not trying to be anything,” Langley tells Audacy. “This record is exactly what I wanted out of it, and it is just me. And I feel like this is gonna be my record where everyone’s gonna be like, ‘That’s where the artistry clicked for her.’”

Miranda Lambert is one of the producers on Dandelion. She co-wrote “Choosin’ Texas,” along with Langley and Joybeth Taylor. Lambert also appears on another song, “Butterfly Season,” which Lambert also co-wrote. See a track list for Dandelion below.
