Life is busy for Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren Akins. The couple welcomed their fifth child and first son, Brave Elijah, into the world in February, making life more than a little chaotic for the parents.
“I still think just having a newborn, plus four other kids’ schedules with school, and sports, and friends, and birthdays — we’re in the weeds, as my grandmother would call it,” Rhett reveals on Audacy.
Still, at least Rhett and Akins are getting some sleep, a rarity for parents of an infant.
“We’re tired, but he’s actually sleeping,” Rhett boasts. “He’s our best sleeping baby that we have had.”

Rhett is opening for Morgan Wallen for a few dates on Wallen’s Still The Problem Tour. He will also headline his own Soundtrack to Life Tour, and open for Luke Combs for select dates on Combs’s My Kinda Saturday Night Tour, But while Rhett is home, he is soaking up every minute of the chaos.
“It’s a season, and I’m really trying to not let it slip me by,” Rhett explains. “I’m not trying to wish it away. [I’m] really just trying to, when I’m home, just be extremely present. It kind of dawned on me the other day that my oldest child, she’s ten, so I have eight summers left with her. When you start thinking about it in terms of like, ‘Whoa, eight years,’ it seems like a long time. But It’s been six years since COVID, and it kind of feels like it was yesterday in some capacity, so that’s how quick time is moving.”
Rhett has said he and Akins are likely done having children, which means this is probably the last time they will go throuh the baby phase.
“I’m really trying to just be as present as I humanly can while I’m home, because I know that this might be the last infant phase that we go through,” Rhett acknowledges. “We’re having a good time. And we’re just tired, but we kind of have learned how to live tired.”
What Thomas Rhett Says About Having 5 Children
Rhett admits he thought after the arrival of their fourth daughter, Lillie Carolina, in 2021, that their family might be complete, never imagining he would one day have a son.
“It’s surreal,” Rhett says on Country Countdown USA. “I thought after our fourth girl, it wasn’t in the cards for me to have a boy. When we were in the hospital, I thought it was gonna be another girl. Having that surprise was one of the coolest moments in my life. He’s a big baby. He was ten pounds; my wife is a super-hero. He’s got a bunch of built-in big sister babysitters. It’s been a blast.”
Especially now that they have a boy, the 36-year-old finds it highly unlikely there will be a sixth child.
“That’s always been Lauren’s magic number of kids,” Rhett says. “I don’t think we’re gonna have any more kids. But it was the coolest thing in the world not to know if it was a boy or girl. I have never been more surprised. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but so worth it.”
Rhett kicks off his Soundtrack to Life Tour on July 9 at Nashville’s Geodis Park. He will be joined for the show by Niall Horan. Find dates at ThomasRhett.com.
