Alexandra Kay, 'Straight For The Heart': Story Behind the Song

Alexandra Kay is about to have a big single at radio. The singer-songwriter recently announced that “Straight For The Heart,” from her forthcoming Second Wind album, is her first official single, after singing with BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville earlier this year.

“Straight For The Heart” is one of only two songs that Kay did not write for the record, with the bold anthem instead written by Karley Scott Collins, Jimmy Robbins, and Sasha Sloan. Collins reveals that when they were writing “Straight For The Heart,” she thought it was going to be on her debut Flight Risk record. Instead, the song found a home with Kay, on Second Wind, out on October 24.

“I had the idea going into it with Sasha Sloan and Jimmy Robbins,” Collins tells Everything Nash. “We wrote the song, and I always loved it. I thought it was special, but it just didn’t fit in with my record. It was always one that I was like, ‘This song is special, and somebody is gonna cut it at some point.’ I am a huge fan of songwriting in general. I have all of these goals for myself as an artist. But having songs cut by other artists has always been a massive dream of mine. It’s been on my goal list forever.”

Since Collins did not include “Straight For The Heart” on Flight Risk, she is thrilled that Kay found a place for it as well, especially as her first radio single on a major record label.

“When I found out that she was gonna record it, I was so excited,” Collins says. “I think she did an incredible job with it, and it seems like people really love it. It’s really exciting to have a song that you wrote and poured your heart into, find such a a good home with somebody. ”

What Alexandra Kay Says About “Straight For The Heart”

Kay predicts “Straight For The Heart” will be her first No. 1 single at country radio. It’s a song she is passionate about, even if she isn’t a writer on it.

”’Straight For The Heart’ is actually my first outside cut by myself,” Kay tells Country Swag. “I actually heard this song while sitting in a pitch meeting for some songs. As soon as it played, I had to have that song. I love it. I love that it really describes how I felt with this kind of female intuition of knowing that things were going south and being strong enough to know that I didn’t have to get let down easy.”

“Even though I wasn’t a creator of it,” she adds, “I’m really excited to be a vessel for it, and take it out into the world.”
