Ben Fuller recently released a song, “If It Was Up To Me,” featuring Carrie Underwood. Fuller, a former addict, wrote the song three and a half years ago, inspired by thinking about how much his life ahd been transformed.

The song was already written when Fuller invited Underwood to join him on the song, after Fuller met Underwood’s husband, Mike Fisher, through Fisher’s brother, Bud.

“I didn’t have any idea what was happening,” Fuller recalls to Everything Nash, speaking of the first meeting with Fisher. “I’m like, ‘This is crazy.’ [It was] probably a year and a half of breakfasts and fellowship. Mike was such a man of God, and I’m so grateful for his discipleship and his love towards me. He shared that song with Carrie, when it came time for the album. And Carrie said, ‘I want to sing on it.’ So, next thing you know, we ended up in the studio together, and we were praising the Lord.”

Fuller praises Underwood, not only for her vocal talents, but also for how she lives out her spiritual beliefs.

“She is very serious about her faith, and I feel like she is being called into even more of that,” Fuller shares. “I’m excited to see in the future; she loves singing about Jesus, and praising her Lord. She’s raising her boys up in Jesus. It’s really special to be a part of. I couldn’t make that up. I couldn’t ask her, ‘Hey Miss Underwood, would you sing this?’ But that’s what God can do, and so let that be an encouragement waiting on doing something big, or having an incredible collaboration.”

Why Ben Fuller Is Open About His Past Struggles

Fuller has been very vocal about his past struggles, including drug and alcohol addiction. For Fuller, it’s his way of making sure others feel worthwhile, in spite of their own shortcomings.

“It’s the blood of the Lamb. It’s the word of our testimony,” Fuller explains. “It’s Jesus and what He can do, and how He can transform a life. I meet so many people that are like, ‘Well, you don’t know what I’ve done. You don’t know how bad I’ve been. You don’t know how far I’ve gone.’ And it’s like, ‘You obviously don’t know the Jesus that I know, because He’ll go to any length to bring you back home. I think it’s important. People think that their bad is the worst. … That is such a tool the devil uses, to hinder you from surrendering to Jesus.”

“If I don’t tell my story anymore, then the enemy’s got a hold on me,” he adds. “And all of a sudden the power of my testimony is gone, and I forget who I am in Christ.”
