Brandon Davis Shares Powerful Message In 'More Than A Game,' Out Now

Brandon Davis‘ new song, “More Than A Game,” is out now. The father of six wrote the song with Chris Slight and Josh Byrd, about the lessons learned from sports.

“It’s amazing to me how you can take an idea like what we had with ‘More Than A Game’ and spark it into something that for me just feels like my life,” Davis explains in a video shared on social media. “It feels like my life growing up, and now it feels like the life I’m living now, because it’s a song about lessons in life. It’s not just about baseball. It’s a song about showing that baseball is a step forward, in showing you what’s next in life.

“It’s showing you what’s going to be, and what a sport can really do to carve who you are as a person,” he continues. “I think that’s the biggest thing. Because a sport is obviously going to show you skills as an athlete. It’s going to show you how to get better at that sport, how to achieve certain goals within that sport.”

Davis may not have ever written “More Than A Game” if not for a conversation he had with his father, when he was just a little boy.

“I remember one of the most important speeches I ever heard, and it wasn’t even really a speech,” Davis recalls. “It was just a talking to that my dad had with me. I was seven years old. I had a horrible game. I struck out three times, and I was so down on myself. Just absolutely wrecked that this had happened. And my dad pulled me aside after the game and looked at me and said, ‘Look, I got one question. Did you try your very best?’ I looked at him and said, ‘Yeah, I did.’ He said, ‘Well then, that’s all that matters. You did exactly what you were supposed to be.’ I learned so much from that short conversation.”

“Because you look at that in the spectrum of all the things you do in the course of your lifetime,” he adds. “You take that moment and say, ‘Okay. Did I do my very best? Did I try my hardest? Did I put everything I had into it?’ And if you can say yes, then you did all you can do.”

“More Than A Game” might have been inspired by the father-son relationship. but its message goes far beyond those who are athletically inclined.

“It’s about learning if you get knocked down, you gotta get back up,” Davis reveals. “Learning that just because you strike out once, doesn’t mean you’re going to strike out every time.”

Davis’s last album, Jumped Right In, was released in April. The record includes “Goodnight Baby,” a lullaby Davis sings to his children every night before bed.

Davis also gives an update on life with his twin daughters,  Remi Kate and Rori Beck, born on April 28.

“The girls, it’s hard to believe they’re almost three months now,” Davis says. “So the girls are doing amazing. They’re healthy as a bull. God has blessed us in more ways than one, but we have not slowed down in the least.”
