Brandon Lake and Cody Johnson‘s “When A Cowboy Prays” is out! Lake first released his own version of the song in September.

“Y’all broke the internet asking for this collab,” Lake says of the new duet. When announcing the song, Lake said, “When a song you love finds the right voice. COJO brought something truly special to ‘When a Cowboy Prays.’ Honored by this collaboration and thankful for this friendship.”

Lake teased the news during one of his concerts last year.

“I heard all of your comments,” Lake said at the time. “I wrote this song, and you’re like, ‘This sounds like CoJo. You gotta get CoJo.’ And I was like, ‘Honey, already on it.’”

The song says in part, “When a cowboy prays / It starts raining in Oklahoma / Long-lost sons come home to mama / And those stubborn horses break / When a cowboy prays / It’s a whisper and a rumble / And it’s as strong as it is humble / This old world just ain’t the same / When a cowboy prays.”

Brandon Lake’s “Hard Fought Hallelujah” Duet With Jelly Roll

The new version with Johnson comes as Lake has a Top 30 hit with Jelly Roll, on “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” a song that won Jelly Roll his first three Dove Awards. Lake had the idea to invite Jelly Roll to sing on the song with him, after watching Jelly Roll sing  “Believe” with  Brooks & Dunn at the 2024 CMA Awards.

“I watched the CMA Awards with Brooks & Dunn,” Lake recalls to K-Love, as part of a joint interview between the two singers. “You performed this song called ‘ I Believe.’ So this is some time before I heard back from Jelly and his team. I fell asleep during the awards show. I’m chilling in bed, it’s late at night. I wake up the next morning, and the first thing I see on my phone is a video of Jelly’s performance, and Brooks & Dunn. I opened it up, still laying in bed and I watched this happen. I had never seen church like this happen in this place. It was so unexpected, and I’m literally laying there, and I start bawling my eyes out.

“I felt the spirit of God translate through my phone, from that moment, after the fact,” he continues. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. This is the dude. He just led the world in worship.’ I don’t think anyone saw it coming. People were standing up, lifting their hands, there are tears rolling down their face. I was just so moved. It gave me all the confidence in the world that this is a dude we have to ask to get on this song.”

Cody Johnson Has A Top 20 Single With “The Fall”

Lake isn’t the only one who currently has a hit at country radio. Johnson has a Top 20 single with “The Fall.” Written by Bobby Pinson, Jeremy Stover and Ray Fulcher, the song is on his Leather Deluxe Edition album.

“I was in the mode of cutting an album, and saying, ‘This is what I want people to hear,’” Johnson says. “I want people to know that the ride is worth the fall, the hardships, the things that you can look that, yeah, it feels like hell when you’re going through the hardships. When you look back at them, without those hardships, you wouldn’t have the successes that you have, and you wouldn’t appreciate them as much.”
