Add Brett Young to the list of country music artists who no longer imbibe. The father of two has a song, “Drink With You,” on his forthcoming 2.0 album, although he reveals he actually gave up alcohol a while ago.
“I don’t even drink anymore,” Young tells American Songwriter, adding that some of the songs on his new record are a decade old.. “Having songs about ex-girlfriends and drinking on a record when I’m married with children and don’t drink anymore wouldn’t be real. This was a creative way of going back and giving Brett ten years ago to the fans that met Brett ten years ago.”
One song that is true to life is “Who I Do It For,” which he sings with Lady A.
“That was why I wanted to write it,” Young explains. “I’m always most interested in writing what I’m going through at the moment because I think that’s the easiest way to be the most authentic for your fans. ‘Who I Do It For’ is exactly what I’m feeling at this stage of my life.”
The California native tours almost half of every week, although he says his time on the road is no longer for himself. Instead, he does it for his daughters, five-year-old Presley, and Rowan, who is three.
“I have to constantly remind myself, ‘You’re not being selfish,’” Young says. “You’re out here to provide for your family. I don’t think they’re old enough to understand that yet.”
Young’s own talks to himself became the inspiration for “Who I Do It For.”
“I went, ‘Brett, enough of your pity party. That’s every artist that has children,” Young recalls. “You’re not the only one. Instead of feeling bad about this situation or bad for yourself, go commiserate with an artist and pull somebody in that can lend their perspective to this song.”
Young wrote “Who I Do It For” with Jon Nite and Kyle Schlienger. He first played the song for Charles Kelley, who immediately asked if he could send it to Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, his two bandmates.
“Dave and Hillary were in immediately,” Young says. “And it’s just this perfect kind of happenstance and blending of moments that brought them in on the song.”
Young shares his young daughters with his wife, Taylor, whom he wed in 2018. And according to Young, their relationship has no choice but to stand the test of time, since he refused to have a prenup. It’s what “If This Doesn’t Work Out” is about.
“I said, ‘I’m not starting a marriage with a ‘If this doesn’t work out,’” says the singer. “I’m so not doing that. A song idea was born: when you get married, you’re not just sharing your heart; you’re sharing everything. Nothing against people that go in with all the contingency plans, but I’m the type that has to go all in. That’s one of my favorite, most romantic expressions of love.”
