Caroline Jones is back with new music. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist just released a new single, “No Tellin’,” the first single from a forthcoming new album on Big Machine Label Group.
“It’s cool because it’s kind of a dichotomy,” Jones tells Everything Nash of the song. “It’s a really uptempo bluegrass, musically rich song, kind of a dark boot-stomper. But lyrically, it’s a really empowering message about telling a really, really hard, ugly truth. Musically, it’s very uptempo and empowering, but lyrically there’s a lot of depth there. It’s a song about the moral courage that it takes to bring something to light that’s really ugly and difficult. And this was a song that I feel like I’ve been wanting to write for a really long time, and I’m so proud of it and so excited that it’s the single.”
Jones has been happily married to her husband, Nick Dana, since 2021. But she still drew from her own experiences to pen the lyrics in “No Tellin’.”
“It’s definitely an amalgam of an experience from my own life,’ Jones reveals. “An unhealthy relationship that I was in when I was younger that I didn’t fully process or understand until actually the last few years. And so it’s really about that. But it’s also kind of equal parts about some stories that I’ve been hearing a lot lately from women that I knew and friends that I knew, and then women in the media. It seems like this song just came out, and I hope that it really reaches the people who need to hear it because there’s a lot of people in all kinds of abusive and unhealthy situations in the world. And it’s really my hope that this song empowers them and makes them feel less alone.”
“No Tellin'” is Jones’ first single from an upcoming record, her first on Big Machine Label Group.
“I’m so excited about my partnership with them,” Jones gushes. “This is the first single of the album, and I’m still in the process of writing and recording the album. We have probably a third or maybe half of the album done, and I’m so proud of it.”
Jones, who is also co-producing the new record, alongside Ric Wake and Julian Raymond, says her new album will still sound like her, and the music her fans already love, while also expanding her horizons. One marked difference with the new record is this time Jones is a mother, after welcoming her son, Declan, in late 2023.
“I would say it’s a lot more musically rootsy than my previous stuff,” Jonex explains. “It’s not that different than my previous stuff. I would just say, I’m always trying to level up. But hopefully with every album, my musicianship gets better and richer and more cohesive. And so, with this record, I think two things are different. I think I have a lot more to say, because I’ve lived so much life between this record and the last record. Becoming a mom, I think, deepens you in so many ways, and has made me really care about the messages and stories that I’m putting out into the world.
“I just feel like they’re more honest and more potent,” she adds. “And then musically, it’s just richer and better, ’cause I’m always getting better as a musician. Being in the Zac Brown Band makes me a better musician. If I could describe the sound of this next record, I would probably say it’s rootsy and powerful.”
Jones is continuing to expand her career as a solo artist. But she is also still deeply committed to her role in the Zac Brown Band, and determined to find a way to do both.
“I really want to continue to do both those things. Well, and be a mom,” she says with a laugh. “I mean, it’s a lot. It’s three full-time jobs. But I really love being the Zac Brown Band. They’re like my brothers. I’m so proud to stand on stage with them. Itmakes me a better musician, songwriter, artist, singer, all the things. So as long as I can manage the schedules, I have plans to be on stage with them.”
