Chris Young Releases ‘Brake Lights,’ From New Album [Listen]

A new song is here from Chris Young! The Tennessee native just dropped “Brake Lights,” from his forthcoming I Didn’t Come Here To Leave record. Young wrote the song with Hillary Lindsey, Ty Graham and Jesse Frasure.

“Brake Lights” says in part, “Give me that slow-down sound of the gravel / Sign that you can’t let go / Throw them reins on down from that saddle / Bring that Mustang home / Give me that look back in the rearview / Like you know you just can’t say goodbye / It’s all that I need, I just want to see / Those don’t-make-my-heart-break lights.”

“This song is one of my favorites on the new album,” Young says.

Chris Young’s New Album

Young’s I Didn’t Come Here to Leave album will be out on October 17. The record includes his current Top 35 single, “’Til the Last One Dies,” plus “Jesus, Momma, Country Radio.” Also included on the record are songs like “Tin Roof,” “Some Around Here“and “Just Keep Living,” the latter a song about his father.

“It’s basically really about what my dad has gone through in his life,” Young shares on the In The Blind podcast. “He’s had two heart attacks, the same heart attack both times. I’m like, ‘Can you pick something else? Like, stub your toe on the coffee table. Don’t do that.’ He had two widowmaker heart attacks that he survived. He got lung cancer and beat that. They cut a third of one of his lungs out. He just went, ‘All right.’”

I Didn’t Come Here To Leave is Young’s first on  Black River Entertainment, after spending his entire career up until now on RCA Records.

“I think this is really just about having a whole lot of freedom,” Young tells Audacy. “The ability to, if I wanna do a song where I’ve just got steel guitar all over it, that’s totally fine. If I want to do something where I’m standing in the studio with two of my good friends, stomping with a mic set up next to our feet to get part of a track that we want like a stomp clap thing, and all of us just like laughing, telling jokes and goofing off, that’s totally okay.”

“You get to just make art,” he adds. “It’s never perfect. It’s always abandoned, but you work as hard on it as you possibly can.”
