Cody Johnson is once again showing off his patriotism. At a recent concert in Michigan, the Texan praised those in the military, law enforcement, first responders and more, before urging his fans to embrace unity instead of division, as the crowd began chanting “USA.”
“In the last five years, me being an adult, a dad, a husband, a business owner, I’ve really paid attention more than I have in my entire life,” Johnson says. “And what I’ve noticed in the last five years is that if we’re not fighting with each other, it almost seems like someone on social media or in the news or in politics can figure out a way to fight about something. I’ve seen it over politics. I’ve seen it over race. I’ve seen it over religion. I’ve seen it over whether you’re gay, straight, black, white, Baptist, Presbyterian. I’ve seen it all.
“And you know what?” he continues. “I think it’s absolutely disgusting, because I feel like we have more in common than we think about every single day. Do you know why it is okay to be different and believe different than your fellow Americans? Because before most of us were born, an American soldier died on foreign soil for us to have that right in this country.”
Johnson goes on to encourage those in the audience to celebrate their differences, instead of trying to make everyone like-minded.
“Don’t get mad about believing different and not seeing eye to eye,” Johnson says. “That’s what people died for. There’s three things that we all have in common, no matter how different we are. Are you ready? It’s very simple. That is red, white and blue. Tonight, instead of division. Instead of the stuff you can see on the news right now. Instead of division, we’re going to do something out of unity. Gentlemen, if you have a hat, I would ask that you remove your cover. We’re all going to sing a song together out of unity in this country.”
Johnson then leads the entire audience in “God Bless America,” as the crowd continues to cheer. Watch the powerful moment here.
This isn’t the first time Johnson has spoken out about politics. When performing last year shortly after the news of the attempted assassination of President Trump was announced, Johnson also spoke out about the state of the country.
“I’m tired of the hatred,” Johnson said at the time. “I’m tired of the division. I’m tired of people talking about Trump and Biden. There’s people in this crowd that agree with Trump. There’s people in this crowd that agree with Biden. Guess what. That is your God-given American right to believe whatever you want. That right was bought with sacrifice. Sacrifice from a dead police officer. Sacrifice from a dead firefighter. A dead soldier that went over and said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna die for something bigger.’
“So I don’t give a damn who you vote for,” he added. “And I don’t give a damn about how you feel about what’s on the news. There’s only three things I give a damn about tonight. You listening to me? They are red, white and blue.”
Johnson was just announced as a co-host of the CMA Fest TV special, along with Ashley McBryde. Find all of Johnson’s music and upcoming shows at CodyJohnsonMusic.com.
