Cody Johnson Hints At ‘Spicier’ New Album After ‘Leather Deluxe’

Cody Johnson Hints At 'Spicier' New Album After 'Leather Deluxe'

A new album might soon be coming from Cody Johnson. Almost a year after Leather Deluxe was released, Johnson hints that he is working hard on a new project.

“I have been recording,” Johnson shares at a recent media event. “Before Leather Deluxe was even really out, I was listening to songs and just kind of getting what’s next. I like to stay ahead of things. I cannot stand when things are chaotic and rushed. I hate putting a date on something and then having to do it up to the date. I like organization and structure at work. Sometimes you can’t have that. It’s live music, it’s a music business. You gotta roll with the punches, and sometimes stuff happens like.”

Johnson reveals he was supposed to record with the iconic Marcus King, but had to postpone the session due to a bus that unexpectedly broke down.

“It is what it is,” he says. “We’ll reschedule it; we will get it further down the road. I’m not on anybody’s timeline but my own.”

Cody Johnson Hints At His Next Album

Johnson’s fans are always clamoring for new music from him. But the father of two, with one on the way, says his primary focus is to release the best record he possibly can, regardless of how long that takes.

“We just got Album of the Year before the Deluxe came out, which was not intentional either,” Johnson says. “We were waiting. … I would say I’ve got a little bit of work for the rest of the year to get done with this record. I don’t want to talk a whole lot about it, because I’m still kind of playing with artwork and photography and the theme of this thing. I don’t want to ever do the same thing twice.”

The Texan also says he wants to show fans a new side of himself, while still maintaining who he is as an artist.

“I don’t want to go off the beaten path,” he says. “But I do want to do something just a little bit spicier. You’ve got to follow up. You hit a home run. Next time you come up to the plate, people are kind of expecting a homerun. And I feel that pressure. It’s a good pressure. That kind of pressure is a privilege to know that I’m in a position where I can really go hit it out of the park again. So definitely working on a new one already. I would say next year be expecting something.”

Cody Johnson’s Current Single, “The Fall”

Johnson currently has a hit single at radio, with “The Fall,” from Leather Deluxe. Written by Bobby Pinson, Ray Fulcher and Jeremy Stover, “The Fall” is the follow-up to his No. 1 hit, “I’m Gonna Love You,” with Carrie Underwood.

“’The Fall’ is one of those songs that I feel like should be on a movie soundtrack,” Johnson says. “It should be on a movie soundtrack because it paints that picture of — you can see the struggle to get to the success. And I think for me, I picture guys like Michael Jordan. You see all the work and all the tired and the angry and the tears and the blood, and you get to the successful moment. And you can even apply that to relationships too, but it has that that overall movie quality about it.”
