Cody Johnson On Releasing ‘The Fall’: ‘This Is What I Want People to Hear’

Cody Johnson is opening up about his latest single, “The Fall.” Written by Bobby Pinson, Jeremy Stover and Ray Fulcher, the song is on his Leather Deluxe Edition album.

“I was in the mode of cutting an album, and saying, ‘This is what I want people to hear,'” Johnson says. “I want people to know that the ride is worth the fall, the hardships, the things that you can look that, yeah, it feels like hell when you’re going through the hardships. When you look back at them, without those hardships, you wouldn’t have the successes that you have, and you wouldn’t appreciate them as much.”

“The Fall” follows Johnson’s No. 1 hit, “I’m Gonna Love You,” with Carrie Underwood. Johnson knew as soon as he heard “The Fall” that he wanted to record it for his project.

“’The Fall’ is one of those songs that I feel like should be on a movie soundtrack,” Johnson says. “It should be on a movie soundtrack because it paints that picture of — you can see the struggle to get to the success. And I think for me, I picture guys like Michael Jordan. You see all the work and all the tired and the angry and the tears and the blood, and you get to the successful moment. And you can even apply that to relationships too, but it has that that overall movie quality about it.”

Cody Johnson Gives An Update After Surgery

Johnson had to cancel the remainder of his 2025 tour dates, to undergo emergency surgery after suffering a ruptured eardrum.

“Everything kind of sounds a little funny right now,” Johnson tells Taste of Country. “It has pissed me off, for lack of a better way of saying it.”

Johnson knows he is getting better, even if the process seems long.

“I’ve been so irritated because I know I wanna hear these things and I wanna be better,” Johnson says. “But it’s taught me a lot of patience.”

“Sit back, wait, and let it heal,” he adds. “It’s taught me a lot of patience.”

Cody Johnson Wins the CMA Award for Male Vocalist of the Year

Johnson just won the CMA Award for Male Vocalist of the Year, beating out Chris StapletonMorgan WallenLuke Combs, and Zach Top. Johnson admits he never expected to win in that category.

“After ten years as an independent artist, I was never at the point that I wanted to be,” Johnson shared. “I got told no so much. No to the cowboy hat, no to the fiddle. No to the steel guitar. There were a lot of cowboy hats and fiddles and steel guitars here at the CMAs tonight. I think that, at this point in my career, I don’t know where I’m supposed to be. I’m really trying my best to trust God, trust His path for me.”
