George Strait is among the latest recipients of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. Strait was honored at a ceremony held on Sunday, December 7, along with Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester Stallone, the band KISS, and Michael Crawford.
“For nearly half a century, this tradition has celebrated those whose voices and visions tell our nation’s story and share it with the world,” said Kennedy Center President Ambassador Richard Grenell. “This year’s Honorees have left an indelible mark on our history, reminding us that the arts are for everyone.”
The ceremony was hosted by President Trump, who commented that Strait still had hair, when he removed his cowboy hat to receive the medal.
Early next year, Strait will also be inducted into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame. Other country artists who are recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors include Reba McEntire, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Garth Brooks, among others.
The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony will air on Tuesday, December 23, at 8:00 PM ET on CBS. Vince Gill, Miranda Lambert, and Brooks & Dunn all performed in tribute to Strait.
George Strait Hints at Potential Retirement
Strait has been making music for more than 40 years, ever since Strait Country came out in 1981. The King of Country Music still performs several times throughout the year, although he hints he is considering retirement in a few years.
“I have maybe five good years to sing my songs for you folks,” Strait said during a recent performance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “But hell, it’s been around 50 now. And I still love it just as much as I ever did … [When] I walk through those curtains and I see your smiling faces, my feet don’t touch the ground again until I walk back out and get on that bus. I don’t know how many more years I can do this, but I figure a few. I do want you to know though, I do walk off this stage, and I’m settled in far away from all of this, you won’t be far away. I’ll still hear your screams and cheers in my mind, and I will always remember you.”
George Strait’s Stadium Tour
When Strait performed in Philadelphia earlier this year, it was the first stop on his Stadium Tour, which included Chris Stapleton for all shows, plus Parker McCollum for four East Coast shows. Little Big Town opened for the only West Coast show. It’s a tour Strait decided to extend into 2025, due to his loyal fans.
“I keep trying to slow down a bit but you keep calling me back,” the King of Country Music said when announcing the new dates. “Please don’t ever stop. I still love it just as much as I always have. Thank you for an amazing year last year and I can’t wait to see you for a few more again this year. ”
Strait currently only has three shows scheduled in 2026.
