Karley Scott Collins Talks Personal New Album, 'Flight Risk' [EXCLUSIVE]

Karley Scott Collins’ debut album is out! The 25-year-old just released Flight Risk, a 16-track project, with Collins co-writing every song on the record.

“I have wanted to put out a full album since I started doing music,” Collins tells Everything Nash. “I grew up collecting vinyl records. And so, I just have always loved looking at a record from the top down, and the track listing, and the way the artist intended for it to be. The entire story of songs, and all of the creative aspects with a full record. It’s something that I’ve always been working towards, but of course, I’ve only done EPs and singles so far.

“So I’m really excited for everyone to hear the whole record the way that we intended for it to be, and tell the entire story, and for people to hear it top down, my entire growth as an artist from day one,” she adds.

Collins, who has spent the last several months touring with Keith Urban,  had a hand in writing all of the songs on Flight Risk, but she also wrote plenty that didn’t make the record.

“I wrote every single day for the last five years, probably sometimes multiple times a day, all of that in mind for putting out a record one day,” Collins reveals. “Honestly, it was very difficult to narrow it down to even 16 songs, out of all the songs we wrote. But writing all the songs myself, it was really important to me, because when I get on stage and I’m singing songs, I want everyone to feel the story behind them, and feel like it’s authentic and that it’s coming from me. And I feel like the only way to do that sometimes is to write them yourself, and have them be about your stories and your life and the people you know. The people that you have loved and you still love. That was important to me.”

The Story Behind Karley Scott Collins’ “Girlfriend”

Collins recently released “Girlfriend,” one of the tracks on Flight Risk. Collins wrote the song with Alex Kline and Summer Overstreet, inspired by something that happened with Collins’ former boyfriend.

“The idea for the song was that my boyfriend at the time, we were actually dating, and he decided that he should tell me about a date he went on one time with another girl,” Collins remembers. “He was just trying to tell me a story. It was not a big deal. But, of course, it was a big deal to me. I didn’t wanna hear about him dating anyone else. I still don’t know anything about her. I don’t know her name or where she’s from or what she looks like, but I, of course, hung onto that. I brought it to my co-write the next day, and I told my friends about it, and we created an entire life story for her, and we wrote that song about it.”

What Karley Scott Collins Says About Her Freshman Album

Collins has already been releasing music for years before the release of Flight Risk. But now, the Florida native is eager to share her entire story with the world.

“I think mostly I’m just really excited,  because I have literally spent the better part of my life working towards this moment. … I’m really excited for people to hear it,” she says. “But of course, there are so many songs on the record that are really vulnerable. A lot of songs that I’ve really poured my entire heart into. So of course, it’s a little nerve-wracking, having the whole world hear all of those things. And then you just put out something that you’ve spent 15 years working towards, and hope everyone loves it. It’s nerve-wracking. It’s exciting. It’s everything.”
