Kylie Morgan Talks 'Like My Own,' A Celebration of Being a Bonus Mom [EXCLUSIVE]

Kylie Morgan has an honest new single, out now. The Oklahoma native just released “Like My Own,” a song inspired by her love for her boyfriend’s daughter.

“This is one of the most special songs that I’ve ever put out for a lot of reasons,” Morgan tells Everything Nash. “It’s from a perspective and a new life that I am now living that is a completely different world for me.”

Even Morgan can’t quite believe how her life has turned out. Morgan married fellow singer-songwriter Jay Allen in 2022, splitting two years later.

“I pretty much set a firework to my life a couple of years ago,” Morgan admits with a laugh. “And just saw that the things around me weren’t fulfilling me. And I felt like I was consistently giving in all of these areas of my personal life and my professional life, and I wasn’t receiving that back. I went through a really bad, really bad breakup, and kind of gave up on love and was like, ‘You know what? If that’s what it is, I don’t want anything to do with it.’  And then I ended up rekindling with an old friend, and fell in love super fast, and he has a beautiful little baby girl that I have fallen in love with just as fast.”

Why “Like My Own” Is So Important to Kylie Morgan

Morgan could never have predicted, even a few years ago, how her story would unfold. But now, she is grateful for all of it, even the hard parts, because of where it led her today.

“Now I get to see her grow every day, and see her just shine,” Morgan reflects. “And I get so fulfilled by that. I just went in, and wanted to write a song from the perspective that I feel like — you hear a lot of stepdad songs, at least I have, but I’ve never heard a perspective when it came to like a bonus mom or stepmom singing to the child that she gets to see her grow, and get fulfilled by. So I’m really excited for this song.”

Not only did Morgan not envision her marriage and subsequent divorce, but she also never wanted to be a mother, until now.

“I was like, no kids,” Morgan admits. “I never wanted to get married, never wanted to have kids. My career was my baby.”

It was a conversation with her guitarist that flipped the script for Morgan. After tellng him why she never wanted kids, he said, “Kylie, have you ever thought about the reason you don’t want kids is because you’re not with the person you want kids with?” The one question changed everything for Morgan.

“I was like, mind blown, mic drop moment,” Morgan recounts. “It’s wild to see the difference of me as a human being, from the past relationship to this one. I walked into this relationship, and I’m like, ‘Oh sure, you have a little girl …Why not?’ Just a totally different perspective.”

What Kylie Morgan Says About Finding Love Again After Her Divorce

Allen, who is now engaged, has been vocal about his split from Morgan, while she has chosen to stay quiet. But Morgan admits that seeing her name in headlines over the end of their marriage was shocking.

“It was way more public than I expected,” concedes the singer. “I have done my absolute best to heal on my own and separately, after a lot of years of therapy, and a lot of things that I had to overcome with that relationship. And then it just felt like a continuous — when I felt like I was taking two steps forward in the healing process, I would be knocked four steps back, because of the continuous one-sided public view that I would not give, but he would.

“So I’ve just continued to keep my eyes forward,” she adds. “And remember that I am who I am because of the things that I’ve gone through. And that is just one of those things that have gotten me where I am now.”

Kylie Morgan Reveals Plans For a New Album

“Like My Own” is the first release from Morgan’s next album, which she is eager to share with her fans.

“I haven’t announced officially, but the project, I’m so proud of. It’s coming with a little extra surprise that I’m announcing next week. It’s gonna be a lot of announcements next week,” she teases. “So there’s gonna be a lot of music coming, and quite a few experiences for fans to be able to see that music live.”
