Lainey Wilson debuted her new song at the American Music Awards. The Grand Ole Opry member performed “Somewhere Over Laredo,” a song from her forthcoming Whirlwind Deluxe album, out on August 22.

“When I’m flying between shows I catch myself looking out the window, talking to God, dreaming, or even reminiscing,” Wilson explains of the inspiration behind the song, which she wrote with Trannie Anderson, Dallas Wilson and Andy Albert. “’Somewhere Over Laredo’ tells a story that speaks to that.”

“I’ve always been inspired by putting myself into other people’s shoes and telling stories from others’ perspective,” she adds, “but I’ve found a new creative avenue with this one putting myself back into a pair of shoes that I wore years ago.”

When announcing Whirlwind Deluxe, the Louisiana native said it was a way to honor how much her career has grown since Whirlwind was released in 2024.

“I’m finding out the Whirlwind never stops,” Wilson says. The more I walk through it, the more my feet stay planted on the ground and my eyes to the sky. In honor of the one-year anniversary of Whirlwind’s release, I will be dropping my Whirlwind (Deluxe) album on August 22.”

Wihirlwind Deluxe includes all of the original songs on Whirlwind, plus five new songs. Those songs are “Somewhere Over Laredeo,” plus “King Ranch, King George, King James,” “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day,” “Bell Bottoms Up” and “Peace, Love and Cowboys.”

Wilson also has another song, out now, besides “Somewhere Over Laredo.” She joins Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert on “Trailblazer.” Wilson and Lambert wrote the song with Brandy Clark, which the three singers debuted at the ACM Awards.

“We were just having a conversation about how both [Lambert and McEntire] have influenced me and [about] passing the torch and blazing trails for each other,” Wilson recalls to Billboard. “Generation after generation, it’s going to continue, but we got to keep blazing those trails for the next one.”

“I remember thinking that this could be a song that a grandmother and a daughter and a grandchild could listen to,” she remarks. “And not just about the history of country music… If we’re not thinking about the people that we’re singing to, then they’re not going to be able to relate.”

Wilson walked away with four wins at the recent ACM Awards, including the night’s highest honor, Entertainer of the Year, for the second year in a row.

“All I’ve ever wanted to do is sing and write music,” Wilson said after her four wins. “Y’all have given me a stage for my songs to be heard and I will never be able to tell you how thankful I truly am for just giving me a shot. Here’s to 14 years in Nashville doing the only thing I know how to do. Love y’all to the moon.”

Wilson is headlining her Whirlwind World Tour, while also planning her wedding to Devlin “Duck” Hodges in 2025. Find all of her music and upcoming shows, and pre-order Whirlwind Deluxe, at LaineyWilson.com.
