LANCO Talks Massive Comeback, Honest Music and Creative Freedom [EXCLUSIVE]

LANCO’s best days might be ahead of them. The group, led by lead singer Brandon Lancaster, released their We’re Gonna Make It album earlier this year. The 14-track record, written or co-written entirely by Lancaster, is the group’s first full-length album in seven years, since their debut Hallelujah Nights came out in early 2018.

“We were that nervous about a sophomore slump that we just kept delaying it until we got to lucky number seven,” Lancaster tells Everything Nash with a laugh. “It’s been seven years, and it’s a lot of life in between then and now, including a whole other record that never was released that’s sitting on the Sony shelves.”

We’re Gonna Make It is LANCO’s first album on Riser House. The group did release several singles after Hallelujah Nights, like “First Beer,” “Near Mrs.” and more. But when LANCO left Sony, they opted to start fresh, with the result being We’re Gonna Make It.

“We could have taken those songs,” Lancaster acknowledges. “We could have rerecorded them, or purchased the masters. But the reality was that by the time we got to a place where we had signed with Riser House, we were ready to put out a record. We were just in different phases of life, and we had different stories we wanted to tell. And I think that despite all the social media and things that are out today for people to access artists, the reality is the majority of people, the way that they really learn about you and get to know you is through your music.”

Mission accomplished with We’re Gonna Make It. Much has changed for Lancaster between Hallelujah Nights and We’re Gonna Make It, including becoming a father to a daughter and a son, and finding out more of who he is, and the kind of music he wants to make.

“Our first album, I wrote the whole album,” Lancaster shares. “I worked with those songwriters, but I was definitely the primary songwriter. And you do that early on because no one else will write with you. I mean, it’s just the nature of the beast. You kind of have to prove yourself to get into those rooms, and get behind those doors. But what happened is, because our first album was so autobiographical and it was so centered around my life, and our biggest hit being ‘Greatest Love Story,’ and then ‘Born to Love You,’ which were just so who I am, and my story, what I found is that fans really attached to who I am.”

Lancaster, refreshingly, feels a responsibility to show his fans who he is through his music. It’s especially evident in LANCO’s current single, “We Grew Up Together,” a collaboration with Christian singer Cory Asbury.

“I imagine that if they’re finding their identity in those songs, that there’s a piece of them in that music,” Lancaster explains. “And so, our current single, ‘We Grew Up Together,’ it’s so funny because putting that song out, you find so many people who are attached to the character in ‘Greatest Love Story,’ that is me, are also now going through that phase of life. They fell in love and they reconnect or whatever, but now they’re starting a family. And so I think it just comes from the thing that connected so greatly was through my lens, that I wanted to keep that.”

Lancaster and Asbury are both co-writers on “We Grew Up Together,” along with LANCO band members Chandler Baldwin, Tripp Howell, and Jared Hampton. The song is already at radio, part of an exciting new chapter for LANCO that will also include a lot of new music.

“We’ve only known the two opposite ends of the spectrum. Now we know Sony and we know Riser,” Lancaster says, referring to the two record labels LANCO has been part of. “And the thing I love about being at a place like Riser is the freedom. There really is a freedom. I’m not kidding .. if we got on the bus, and wrote and record a record on the bus, they would put it out in two weeks, if that’s what we wanted to do. It’s very artist-led, artists leading the charge. They’re just a great support system.”
