Luke Bryan has a Top 10 hit with “Country Song Came On.” The song was written by Dan Alley, Ryan Beaver and Neil Medley, for Bryan’s 2024 Mind of a Country Boy album.
“Through the years, I’ve had songs that I really believed in, that not everybody believed in, and they worked out,” Bryan tells Billboard. “This one’s funny, because everybody’s really on the same page and excited to see it come out.”
Bryan may not have written “country Song Came On,” but he certainly lived it.
“From the time I was 16 years old till I got my record deal, I [played] most of my concerts in little bars and honky tonks,” Bryan says. “So I spent a good 12, 13 years playing in those environments and playing the Merle Haggard songs and the Waylon Jennings songs and the Keith Whitleys and all that. So it’s nice to find one like this that really is authentically me.”
As soon as Bryan heard “Country Song Came On” in January of 2023, he immediately raised his hand saying he wanted to record the song for his next record.
“[Bryan] wanted something country and something straight ahead,” his producer, Jeff Stevens, says.
“Country Song Came On” is likely Bryan’s last single from Mind of a Country Boy, since he reveals he is already working on a new record.
“I’m on tour right now,” Bryan tells The Tennesseean. “I’m actively writing songs. People always ask me, ‘Are you working on a new album?’ I don’t think I ever stop really working on a new album. I’m always trying to write a little bit and find songs. My current single, ‘Country Song Came On,’ is nearing the Top 10 right now, which I’m excited about. But the bottom line is, get in the studio at some point and record some new music, and just keep doing the deal. Keep enjoying being a country music singer.”
“Country Song Came On” will likely be Bryan’s 32nd No. 1 hit. It’s a number that’s astounding, even to him, coming on the heels of “Love You, Miss You, Mean It.”
“I’ve tried to approach my career and the business to never take a day for granted,” Bryan tells CMT. “Never take a hit song for granted. So … 31 is really hard for me wrap my brain around. It’s a testament to the fans supporting me throughout the years. Whether I’m on stage or writing music or recording songs, I just always try to put them first, and make sure that I can do a song that relates to them.
“‘Love You, Miss You, Mean It’ certainly feels like it has been,” he continues. “To have it be No. 31 is pretty crazy. When I go back and look at the list of 31, it freaks me out. I don’t wanna keep talking about it, ’cause I’m scared the streak’s gonna end.”
