Luke Combs has a Top 10 hit with “Back In The Saddle.” The song is the first release from his forthcoming new album, the follow-up to his 2024 Father & Sons record. Keep reading to find out everything to know about Combs’ latest single.
Who Wrote “Back In The Saddle”
Combs wrote “Back In The Saddle” with Jonathan Singleton and Dan Isbell.
What Inspired “Back In The Saddle”
Combs says “Back In The Saddle” is inspired by his excitement and eagerness to release another album.
“The thing that made me want to make ‘Back In The Saddle’ the lead single for my next record is, I think, that’s kind of what this song’s about,” Combs tells Audacy. “It’s about being in the studio, just getting back in the swing of things, letting people know that you’ve got new music coming out. I’m excited about being around and being on tour, and being in the studio and writing songs. Just being around, and I’m excited for people to check it out.”
Whose Idea Was “Back In The Saddle”
Combs loves introducing his next set of tunes with “Back In The Saddle,” but it wasn’t his idea. Instead, Singleton and Isbell first had the idea, before giving it to Combs.
“Jonathan and Dan had sent me the chorus to this thing,” Combs remembers. “They’re like, ‘Is this in the right direction…? And I remember being like, ‘Dude, this is a me thing for sure.’ Came in a few days later, got together with those guys, and woodshedded this thing. It’s just fun. I got to write this song with two of my best friends. That’s just such a unique thing to get to do. And to feel so confident in the writing process, and being able to trust those guys, and those guys being able to trust me. It turned out really great. I think it’s going to be a huge tune for me. I really, really do.”
Who Is In The Video For “Back In The Saddle”
If ever a video brought a song to life, it’s Combs’ “Back In The Saddle.” NASCAR greats Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Richard Petty both appear in the video, which was shot in North Carolina.
“Well, basically Luke texted me and said, ‘Hey man, I’m gonna do a music video for this song,'” Earnhardt, Jr. remembers (via American Songwriter). “He sent me the song, he said, ‘Would you wanna be in it?’ I said, ‘Yes, absolutely.’ And so we started talking about what we would do, where we would do it. They thought, man you know, let’s get Next Gen car and go to Charlotte Motor Speedway.”
What Else Do We Know About Luke Combs’ Next Album
Combs has written more than 30 songs for his next record, although he doubts they will all make it onto the project.
“I probably got one recording session left on it, but I’ve already recorded, I don’t know over 30 songs, I would think,” Combs tells Audacy. “I don’t know that there’s any plans to do like the big album thing. I just don’t know if I’d love that idea. There’s nothing against it. I mean, obviously it works really well.”
“I’m really stoked about everything that we’ve recorded. I think it’s really, really strong stuff,” he adds. “Obviously everyone says that about every album they’ve ever done, so take that with a grain of salt. But it’s really just up to people how good it is, but I’m really excited about it. I’m really stoked to be getting back into it.”
Combs admits he doesn’t know what the album will be called, but he does say it’s already his favorite.
“As it begins to take shape I can honestly say I’ve never felt better about one at this stage. It’s early on but I really do think it could wind up being the best record I’ve ever made,” he boasts.
