Megan Moroney fans won’t have to wait too much longer for a new album from her. The 27-year-old reveals she is almost finished with her next project. The record follows Moroney’s sophomore Am I Okay? record, out last July.
“I’m always writing,” Moroney tells People. “I mean, I would say that my next album is probably like 80 percent written.”
“I just try to live my life and write about it. So that’s kind of how this next album is shaping up, too,” she adds. “Just like the last ones — I was writing about my life experiences. So the strategy behind it hasn’t changed. It’s still the same.”
Moroney has no trouble being vulnerable in her music, as evidenced in songs like “Tennessee Orange,” “I’m Not Pretty” and more.
“There’s definitely strength in being painfully honest, even if it’s hard to talk about whatever it is,” Moroney maintains. “And I feel like I’ve got a fan base of younger girls that really look up to me. So if I can be the one that tells them it’s going to be okay, or I once felt this way and now I don’t — I think it’s brave, and I don’t feel weaker for it.”
Still, for all of the emotions she is willing to share in her music, the Georgia native says the next set of tunes will be light-hearted and happy.
“I would say I’ve still got the emo cowgirl staples on there because it wouldn’t be a Megan Moroney album without some heart-wrenching thing, but I do think it’s lighter and it’s really fun,” she hints
Moroney has two hit singles at radio right now. She has a Top 5 single with the title track of Am I Okay?, along with “You Had To Be There,” the latter with Kenny Chesney. Moroney wrote the song as a gift to the country music superstar, who invited her to serve as the opening act on his 2024 Sun Goes Down Tour.

“We played it like eight times in a row.,” Chesney recalls of listening to the song for the first time, while talking about the song with Moroney. “And I couldn’t believe it, because it was a true postcard, if you will, of everything we experienced on the road. The ups, the downs, the Miami trip, all of it. And the thing about it is, I didn’t know Megan when we first started on the road. I went to breakfast one time with her. I felt like, if I’m gonna be on the road with Megan all summer, I need to meet her before the first show. We met, and that was like in February, and I didn’t see her again until April.”
Moroney learned plenty by watching Chesney perform night after night, which she trie to convey in “You Had To Be There.”
“It sounds like a Kenny Chesney song, and it’s just really authentic to the story of what happened,” Moroney says. “The first verse is me getting ready for the concert in 2018. I was a sophomore in college when I went and saw him in Atlanta. The second verse comes around and says, ‘Seven years later, got a different point of view,’ which obviously, seven years later, I was on tour with Kenny Chesney. I said on stage every night that it was such a full-circle moment. We all loved the song. I had no idea if Kenny was going to like the song, but I was like, ‘I’m gonna write it down on a piece of paper, and that will be my gift to him, and I’ll play it for him when we get there.’”
