Megan Moroney Shares the Story Behind Her Duet With Ed Sheeran

Megan Moroney has a song, “I Only Miss You,” on her latest Cloud 9 record, and it’s with pop superstar Ed Sheeran. Moroney and Sheeran wrote the song with Ben Williams, Mackenzie Carpenter, and Micah Carpenter.

Moroney recently sat down with her good friend, Kenny Chesney, on his SiriusXM No Shoes Radio, to share the story behind the very country song.

“I’ve got to give the credit to Ed Sheeran, because he and I met early in 2025. when he asked me to play the Bluebird with him,” Moroney shares. “I thought it was like a joke. I thought it was like a spam email and I was like, ‘This guy is like trying to lure me into coming to the Bluebird Cafe, and I’m going to get murdered.’ But turns out it was real, and we met and became friends after that. He was telling me that his wife and kids love my music. So he’s always been on my list of dream collabs.

“But I didn’t want to ask him too prematurely, before the friendship was there,” she continues. “So we started sending each other songs back and forth, and I think it was kind of us nonchalantly being like, ‘Yeah, I want to do a song with you.’ ‘Yeah, I want to do a song with you.’ But it wasn’t like, ‘Let’s do this. Let’s do a collab.'”

How Megan Moroney and Ed Sheeran Wrote “I Only Miss You”

Moroney and Sheeran began sending songs back and forth, although Moroney says she was sending him very “pop-sounding songs,” which didn’t work for Sheeran.

“Whenever there’s been a pop crossover in country, the song is typically pop,” Moroney maintains. “And Ed, he just didn’t like any of those. And he would send me some songs that weren’t quite right. And then the album was due in like a month, and I was like, ‘Well, I’ve got this like song that’s super country. I don’t know if he’s going to like it, but I’ve already sent him like ten other songs he didn’t like, so I might as well just send him this last one.’ And he ended up loving it.

“I was surprised by that, because I never imagined him wanting to do a traditionally country song,” she adds. “But I loved it.  I just didn’t know who I was going to sing it with. And then it turned out perfect.”

What Megan Moroney Says About Her ‘Cloud 9’ Album

Cloud 9 is Moroney’s third studio album, and her favorite project so far.

“I truly love every single song on this album so much,” Moroney tells USA Today. “I feel like in the past, it’s been hard to be proud of myself, but I feel very proud of this album and myself, which is a new feeling.”

When Cloud 9 was released, the Georgia native said it was a new step for her in country music.

“I had the most fun I’ve ever had writing these songs/dreaming up this world, and a majority of this album was created right in the midst of the Am I Okay? Tour,” Moroney shares on social media. “The pure joy y’all brought me night after night resulted in so many of these songs and ideas so I can’t thank y’all enough for inspiring me.

“There’s a newfound confidence woven throughout Cloud 9 along with humor, honesty, heartbreak (duh), softness and love,” she continues. “It’s got everything I love about country music. Never in a million years would I have guessed I’d have songs with Ed Sheeran and Kacey Musgraves, but I hope it inspires any and all dreamers out there to keep going. Your wildest dreams are not out of reach.”
