Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton just made their live debut of their current hit single, “A Song To Sing.” The two performed the song, which they co-wrote along with Jenee Fleenor and Jesse Frasure, on July 19, while Stapleton is serving as the opening act for George Strait‘s Stadium Tour.

“A Song To Sing,” which to date is also Lambert’s biggest streaming debut of her career, was inspired by the two channeling  Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.

“It was really fun,” Lambert shares on SiriusXM‘s The Highway.  “On our group text, the memes we keep sending are all the Kenny and Dolly. We really wanted to fully go there, and I feel like we did, and paid homage to our heroes.”

Lambert also drew inspiration from looking at Stapleton and his own wife, Morgane, in penning the feel-good track.

“The song makes you feel good,” Lambert says. “So it was like, ‘Let’s sing about a love story in a good way.’ And no one’s lived a love story on the road like Chris and Morgane, obviously, and how the music can ground you and bring you back together, in the same way that ‘Islands in the Stream’ makes you feel. It’s that. It’s that feel-good, heartwarming, you just kind of want to sway and hug the person you’re with. It’s all okay. We’re all right. Because the road is a tough life. And if you can find somebody that can put up with it, and love you through it and feels like home away from home, then that’s kind of what the song is about.”

Ahead of the release of “A Song To Sing,” Lambert praised Stapleton for how his relationship with his wife helped inspire the song.

“Chris understands this emotion from the inside out, because he and Morgane have both lived it,” Lambert says. “To have someone so soulful and willing to go into the heart of the feelings, to share the pull of the road and creative life – and what that means when you love someone with every bit of your being is next level. When we finished it, we both knew we wanted to release it, to share it with everyone.”

Stapleton wasn’t Lambert’s only duet of the evening. She also joined Strait to sing two songs, both “Run” and “How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls.”

“A Song To Sing” debuted in the Top 40 when it was released. The song follows Lambert’s “Run,” from her Postcards from Texas record, her first album on Republic Records, after leaving Sony Music Nashville, where she had been for 20 years.
