Riley Green is opening up about his acting debut. The singer just confirmed he is starring in several episodes of the new CBS show, Marshals, a spinoff of Yellowstone.
“I put some thought into it for a while, and was kind of wanting to explore that a little bit,” Green tells Entertainment Tonight. “And then I got to know Luke [Grimes], and we became good buddies. He was starting his music career; I was trying to help him out in town. We wrote some songs together, and it was really just buddies talking.”
It was Grimes who urged Green to pursue acting, also helping the singer get his first acting role.
“I flew out here [to Los Angeles], read for it on Saturday, and flew back and started filming on Monday, so it was a quick thing,” the Alabama native recalls.
Riley Green Admits He Was Nervous In His First Acting Role
Green has starred in plenty of his music videos. But filming a TV show is entirely different, which is why he admits he was nervous on his first day.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been nervous,” Green concedes. “You walk on stage, everybody’s there to see me. It’s my show. Everybody works for me. You go on a set, nobody works for me. And you’ve really got that feeling of, ‘I’m the new kid.’ So it was cool to feel that, like it’s a challenge. And to feel those nerves. Fortunately, I was around some really great people.”
Green might have been more nervous, if he had time to think about being on the small screen. Fortunately, everything happened so quickly that he didn’t have much time to think about his new career.
“I honestly think I got thrown into it so fast, I didn’t have time to get nervous,” Green maintains. “It was some really intense scenes. My character’s got a lot of backstory; he’s got a lot of emotion. He’s been through a lot. It was kind of tough to get into that mode. It took a little while to do it. But once I did it, it was something that kind of got easy to fall into.”
Riley Green Reveals He Reached Out to Tim McGraw For Advice
Even before the role in Marshals came along, Green was interested in acting, which is why he reached out to Tim McGraw for advice. McGraw and his wife, Faith Hill, starred in another Yellowstone spinoff, 1883.
“I talked to Tim McGraw a little bit,” Green reveals. “He was at my record label. I was kind of picking his brain, when I was thinking about doing some acting. He was just such a great guy to talk to, because he does such a great job with it. He’s such a great actor. Luke’s one of those guys, too; it was so awesome to have him around, my first few scenes to be with him, and just have that rapport with him was really helpful.”
Riley Green’s Country Music Career Extends Into His First TV Role
Green’s role in Marshals comes as he is also having a string of hits at country radio. Fortunately, Green is able to combine the two for his character in Marshals.
“I get to play a little bit on the show,” Green says. “My character, Garrett, happens to play guitar and sing a little bit, so I get to play some on the show. It’s gonna be cool to see that world intertwine with country music, because it’s such a great honor.”
While Green’s first priority will always be country music, the 37-year-old hopes to add more roles to his resume.
“I hope I get to do some more of it. I really enjoyed it,” Green says.
