Ryan and Rory have a new song out, and it’s with a country music superstar. The new duo, made up of Ryan Follesé and Rory John Zak just released “Together Again,” featuring Jamey Johnson. The song was written by Follesé’s father, hit songwriter Keith Follesé, along with Gerry House and Jamey, and was once held for Alan Jackson to record.

“It was one of those songs that just stopped me in my tracks,” Ryan recalls, when he first heard the song as a teenager. “It was pure country with a storyline that hit different.”

Fast forward to Ryan wanting to record the song as part of Ryan and Rory, and it didn’t take long for Jamey to agree to join them on the track.

“I’ll do anything for your boy,” Jamey told Keith.

It might seem like Jamey is doing the new act a favor, but it turns out, he was thrilled to be part of “Together Again.”

“I am most humbled that they invited me to join them,” the Grand Ole Opry member tells People. “Ryan and Rory recorded such a great arrangement.”

For a songwriter who has written plenty of hits, Jamey still vividly recalls the moment “Together Again” was written in 2008.

“I treasure the memory of getting to write with Gerry House and Keith Follesé,” Jamey says. “I consider them among the best songwriters with which I’ve ever had the privilege to work. When Keith told me his son remembered and loved the song, I was overjoyed.”

Indeed, the song is an interesting take on The Wizard of Oz, one that Jamey is rightfully proud to have been part of 17 years ago.

“It’s about the feeling of complete devastation following a breakup,” Jamey explains. “That feeling reminded me of the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz losing all his hay and getting scattered around. We also mentioned Humpty Dumpty, the egg that fell from the wall and could not be reassembled despite all the King’s best efforts. Our characters all ask if maybe they all got lost on the way.”

Ryan’s mother, Adrienne Follesé is also a hit songwriter. Together, his parents wrote “I Love You” by Martina McBride, one of their collaborative hits. His father also wrote songs like “Something Like That” by Tim McGraw and “The Way You Love Me,” among others. For someone who grew up hearing a long string of hits by his parents, Ryan knew “Together Again” was something special.

“I remember just being like — I’ve never heard a country song like that in my life,” Ryan says. “I had never heard it from that perspective.”

“It was just sitting there like a diamond in the rough for all this time,” Ryan says.

“Together Again” is a perfect song for this point in Ryan and Rory’s promising career, and a fitting new chapter for them.

“They say Nashville is a storyteller town—and this one hits close to home,” says Ryan. “It’s about legacy, timing, and how a song can come full circle when the time is right.”
