Trisha Yearwood Writes All the Songs on 'The Mirror,' Out Now

Trisha Yearwood‘s The Mirror album is out. The 15-track record is entirely co-written by Yearwood, a career first for the 60-year-old.

“When I was 19 years old, someone told me I wasn’t a songwriter, and I let that be the truth for a very long time,” Yearwood says of the record. “But at some point in the past few years, something shifted and I started writing and then just never stopped. You’d think that after all this time, I’d have nothing new to share, but now I feel like I’m on a whole new adventure.”

Yearwood has been part of country music since 1991, when “She’s In Love With the Boy” was released.

“My first single went to No. 1,” Yearwood tells The Tennessean. “My goal was, how do I not be a trivia question, whose first single went to No. 1, and then she was never heard from again.”

Yearwood has released more than 20 albums, and well over 50 singles. Not surprisingly, Yearwood still has a lot she wants to do in country music.

“I still want the recognition,” the Grand Ole Opry member maintains. “I want people to like it. I want to sell records, all those things. But, there’s not so much of a pressure to do it. It’s more of, what do I want to do?”

It was Leslie Satcher, a co-writer on seven of the 15 tracks, who first suggested Yearwood try her hand at songwriting.

“She’s like, ‘Girl, every time we get together, I think you’ve got something to say,’” Yearwood tells CMT. “So, I finally said, ‘Okay, I’ll do this with you, but I’m really nervous.’”

The result is The Mirror, the beginning of a new chapter for Yearwood.

“It seemed a little cliché, but The Mirror is truly a reflection of what I’ve been doing the last two years,” Yearwood explains. “And really the whole album is kind of looking at myself. I wrote a lot of songs to my younger self with these girls, and so it just felt like it was the right time.”
