Wade Bowen has a new song out with one of country music’s biggest hitmakers. The Texan just dropped a new version of “Hidin Behind This Microphone,” featuring Cody Johnson. Bowen originally included the song on his latest album, Flyin.

“I’ve loved this song so much from the moment we wrote it,” Bowen says. “And it took us a long time to finish it, which happens sometimes. It was already one of my favorite songs on the album when I started getting texts from Cody about how much he loved the song and related to it some nights. Obviously, coming from a guy like him, that means the world. He’s one of my favorite voices and has always been a good friend to me. I’m so glad we finally get to do something together.”

Flyin came out in 2024. The 12-song project is special to Bowen, who has already released more than a dozen albums in the last more than two decades.

“I do think there is an energy to this record that I’ve never had,” Bowen told Everything Nash when Flyin was released. “I think there’s something special in that record that fans of ours, or people that listen to us and listen to this record, I think that they’re going to hear this energy that I am very proud to have captured somehow with the new project. Whether we meant to or not — I feel like we meant to — but there’s something about this live aspect, or how we carried over what I do live into the studio — there’s an energy; there’s a feel-good aspect to this project which kind of flies off of the page, and I love that.”

Johnson is having a lot of success with collaborations. He recently celebrated a No. 1 single with Carrie Underwood, on their “I’m Gonna Love You” duet. For Johnson, he only wanted to record “I’m Gonna Love You” if Underwood was singing on it with him.

“I get the song and as soon as I hear it, I went ‘Carrie Underwood,’” Johnson recounts. “And they’re like, ‘Well, what about this person, what about this person.’ I’m like, ‘Nope, it’s Carrie Underwood.’ So then, once Carrie and I are in the studio, she’s like, ‘You know, I had this song. This is the second time it’s come into my life’ and I’m like, ‘Well, that’s if that’s not meant to be. I don’t know what is.'”

Bowen isn’t Johnson’s first collaboration. He previously released “Dear Rodeo” with Reba McEntire, “Long Live Cowgirls” with Ian Munsick, and “Whiskey Bent” with Jelly Roll. He currently has “She Hurts Like Tequila” out with Carín León.

Bowen has plenty of dates on the calendar over the next few months. Find “Hidin Behind This Microphone” and all of Bowen’s music and upcoming shows at WadeBowen.com.
