Ray Stevens is fortunately on the mend after undergoing surgery following a heart attack. Stevens reportedly experienced chest pain last Friday evening, and was subsequently admitted to a Nashville hospital. Stevens underwent a heart catheterization and will now take time to recover at home.
As a result of his heart attack, the 86-year-old is canceling all of his performances at his CabaRay in West Nashville through July.
In early 2024, Stevens announced he would cease performing regularly at his CabaRay.
“I plan to stop performing regularly at my CabaRay Showroom here in Nashville at the end of 2024, but I’ll be going to work everyday in my recording studio and maybe I’ll do a few, a very few, shows in some old familiar places,” Stevens said at the time. “I’m definitely slowing down but I haven’t come to a complete stop. Not yet, anyway!”
CabaRay became a way for Stevens to be able to perform without traveling as much.
“I’ve always been in the music business, since I was 15 years old, and I’ve traveled all over the world, played shows, written, and recorded a lot of successful records. And so I was tired…” Stevens previously told The Tennessean. “The reason I built the CabaRay was I was just tired of the road, tired of traveling or having to get on a plane or bus to go where I needed to perform. And so I built the CabaRay!”
Stevens was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019. For Stevens,it was a sign of acceptance, after decades of making his own music, his way.
“I’ve always felt like Nashville didn’t know how to take me, didn’t know what to do with me …I feel like it’s a sign of acceptance, which everybody wants to be accepted by their peers and by the people they know and work with,” Stevens told The Tennessean ahead of his induction. “I hope when the induction ceremony is underway that I can hold my composure. I think I can.”
On December 31, 2022, Stevens’ wife Peggy Ragsdale passed away. The couple had been married for more than 60 years.
Stevens’ latest album, Say Whut? was released earlier this year. The comedian and singer may not be performing over the next few weeks, but he still wants to hear from his fans. Cards can be sent to 5724 River Road, Nashville, TN 37209.
