Trisha Yearwood Opens Up About Her Marriage to Garth Brooks

Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks will celebrate 20 years of marriage next month. Yearwood, who was married twice before, says she learned something from her former relationships, lessons she applies to her marriage with Brooks.

“When I married Garth and I moved to Oklahoma, I stopped,” Yearwood says (via People). “I wasn’t touring 200 days a year anymore. I was a bonus mom to three children, and I was trying to make a marriage work, because I had learned that marriages don’t work if you’re never together.”

“That’s kind of important. You have to be together,” she adds. “I made a conscious effort to be there, to go to soccer games and cook dinner.”

What Trisha Yearwood Says About Being A ‘Bonus Mom’ To Garth Brooks’ 3 Children

Brooks was also married before, to Sandy Mahl. Although Yearwood never had children, she enjoys having Brooks’ three daughters in her life, and her own unique role as they were growing up.

“It was a gift that I received from Garth and the girls of having them in my life that I didn’t even know I was missing,” Yearwood tells SheKnows. “I can’t imagine my life without them … When you don’t have children, you have the luxury of being selfish, because it’s just about you. You don’t have to think about somebody else first. And as an artist, it’s easy to be really egocentric because your job is to be thinking about your career, what you have to do next, how you’re going to take yourself to the next level. So to get out of that space and to realize that it doesn’t matter what I have going on, it was a real lesson for me.”

Trisha Yearwood Releases New Music

Yearwood recently released The Mirror, her first album of songs that she helped write. She also just released Christmastime, a holiday album that follows her 2016 Christmas Together record, which she did with Brooks..

“I had a short list of things that I was like, ‘If I ever make another Christmas record, I want to do that,'” Yearwood shares. The record includes “Christmas Time Is Here,” from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

A Charlie Brown Christmas is my absolute favorite [album],” Yearwood says. “And I haven’t heard a ton of people record that song.”

“I actually walked down the aisle [to] that song because we married in December,” she adds.
