Luke Bryan is one of several artists who performed at the recent CMA Fest. Bryan ran through several of his hits, including his current single, “Country and She Knows It.” The song, written by Matt Dragstrem, Josh Miller, and Parker Welling, is part of Bryan’s forthcoming new album, Signs, which will be available on September 18.
The song is part of the CMA Fest Presented by SoFi TV special, streaming now on Hulu.
“It’s just really fun to honor the hardcore country music fans that come to Nashville,” Bryan tells the Country Music Association. “It’s all about honoring them, honoring what they’ve done for my career, and it’s all about watching the new artists go establish their relationship with all these fans that come into town. It’s a real special night for me.”
The Story Behind “Country And She Knows It” by Luke Bryan
The chorus of “Country And She Knows It” says, “She country and she knows it / Everybody in here does too / Body like a river just rollin’ / Tall boots stepping like one, two, one, two / It don’t matter where she goin’ / Roots run deep but they can’t hide / That girl’s country and she knows it / And she knows she’s got this country boy tonight.”
Bryan is aware that the song is grammatically incorrect. He just doesn’t care.
“Your high school English teacher would certainly cringe at that,” Bryan admits to Billboard. “But, you know, it sounds a little country when you’re saying it that way.”
For Bryan, grammatically correct or not, he loved the way “Country And She Knows It” sounded the first time he heard it.
“I always like to envision people in the summertime dancing at the lake on their boats,” Bryan says. “And this feels like they’ll be doing that with this song.”
Luke Bryan’s New Album, ‘Signs’
Signs is Bryan’s ninth studio album. In addition to “Country And She Knows It,” the record also includes “Word On The Street,” “Fish Hunt Golf Drink,” and “Made It a Memory.”
“It is always a great day when I get the chance to release new music,” Bryan said when announcing the project. “I’ve been working on this album for the past year, and I just love how it turned out. I was able to co-write a few, then turn to the writers in Nashville to round them out. I feel like my fans have always let me record songs that make you feel good, so I went into this album wanting everyone to just have fun.”
When speaking about Signs on social media, the Georgia native said Signs is one of his more personal projects.
“This record is a little bit of everything that shaped me,” Bryan revealed. “It’s heartbreak, it’s healing, backroads, and barstools. It’s the signs you miss and the ones you can’t ignore. It’s the nights that went wrong, and the ones you wish you could live again. It’s where I come from, the woods, the fields, the people, and how love lost, in time, have a way of straightening you out, or crooking your rows of corn for good. These are my signs.”
