Alan Jackson Shares the Story Behind One of His Favorite Songs [WATCH]

Alan Jackson is sharing the story behind one of his favorite songs. The Country Music Hall of Fame members reveals that “Angels and Alcohol,” the title track of his 2015 record, is one of his favorite songs he has sung throughout his 35-plus year career.

“I love the melody,” Jackson shares of the song, which he wrote by himself. “It’s country. I just love the groove on this one, and it’s a very simple song. There’s not even a chorus. There’s just four verses. It talks about how it’s hard to love somebody when you’re so messed up on the alcohol. One line’s about you can’t change lonely with a bottle of wine. You can’t solve your problems by dipping into that either to the extreme. That’s basically what the song’s about. It’s one of my favorites.”

Jackson could still record music, but his days of touring have sadly come to an end. Jackson performed his final show on his Last Call: One More For The Road Tour, in May in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jackson decided to stop touring due to his progressive Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, a neurological disorder that affects his mobility.

“It’s been a long, sweet ride,” Jackson said at the time. “It started 40 years ago this September. My wife and I drove to Nashville with an old U-Haul trailer, and chased this dream. It’s been a crazy ride. I’ve lived the American dream for sure, and I’m so blessed. Thank y’all so much for all your support of my music and coming to shows. It’s amazing how time and all that stuff works in your life. It all comes down to just one little three-minute song.”

The 66-year-old is planning on one more show in Nashville in 2026, to celebrate his historic career.

“We’re planning on doing a big finale show in Nashville next summer sometime,” Jackson hinted during his last tour stop. “I just felt like I had to end it all where it all started, and that’s in Nashville, Tennessee, Music City, where country music was born. So I gotta do my last one there. But this is the last one out on the road for me.”

Jackson recently received the ACM Alan Jackson Lifetime Achievement Award, given to him by his good friend, Reba McEntire.

“I came to Nashville with a paper sack full of songs and a crazy dream, and all these years later, I’m standing here receiving such an honor like this,” Jackson said. “It’s mind-blowing. I thank God all the time for all the people that have been a part of my life and career that have helped me get here and maintain it all this time.”
