A visualizer video for Alexandra Kay‘s “Better Off” is out now. The song is on Kay’s sophomore Second Wind record, released last October.
Written by Kay, along with Dan Pellarin and Jet Harvey, “Better Off” is the first song on the 14-track project.
“[It’s] a song that feels like it lives in the world of the last record,” Kay tells Rolling Stone. “So then I can slowly bring people in from all I’ve ever known land into Second Wind because healing isn’t linear, and I didn’t want the record to feel like I just popped out and was like, ‘I’m not heartbroken anymore.’”
“Better Off” says in part, “I know we made a promise in sickness and in health / But I think God would rather watch us walk away than walk through hell / ‘Cause we did all our damage before death could do us part / For worse or for better off.”
What Alexandra Kay Says About Her Sophomore ‘Second Wind’ Album
Second Wind is Kay’s sophomore record, and her first on BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville. She previously released All I’ve Ever Known, her first project, in 2023. Second Wind shows Kay’s trajectory as an artist, along with her happiness in life, after falling in love with Rocko Beall, her band member turned boyfriend.
“He’s great. Right place, right time kind of thing, to where I was looking, seeing him in a different light,” Kay sayson the Artist Friendly with Joel Madden podcast. “And then when we got together, the really cool thing was that, if you really unpack my last record, a lot of it was me feeling in my relationship like every little bit of love and affection was like pulling it out.
“And honestly feeling like I was high-maintenance when it came to love,” she adds. “I remember my ex used to tell me things like, ‘You need to stop watching Instagram reels,’ and ‘Real relationships aren’t like that.’”
Alexandra Kay Is Already Working On Her Third Album
Second Wind came out towards the end of 2025, but the Illinois native is already hard at work on her third record.
“I’m writing my third album now. I’ve already written a bunch of songs for it,” Kay reveals on XTU Philadelphia. A talented songwriter, Kay typically writes the words in her songs.
“I’m a lyrics person first….I think that’s because I grew up not playing any instruments, and just grew up as a writer, just diary entries that turned to poems,” Kay shares. “And then heard melodies and wrote that. And then, I learned how to play an instrument after that. I could just write it without anything.”
Kay was recently named as one of the members of the Opry NextStage Class of 2026, along with Emily Ann Roberts, Tyler Braden, Carter Faith, Vincent Mason, Hudson Westbrook, Jake Worthington, Graham Barham, and Willow Avalon.
