Alexandra Kay‘s sophomore Second Wind is here. The 14-track record comes nearly two years after her telling All I’ve Ever Known album. This record is still honest, a signature trait for Kay. But this one shows a new side of Kay, one happily in love, and willing to share the love story with the world.
Second Wind begins with “Better Off,” a song that indicates Kay’s happiness, after falling in love with her guitar player, Rocko Beall.
“[It’s] a song that feels like it lives in the world of the last record,” Kay tells Rolling Stone. “So then I can slowly bring people in from all I’ve ever known land into Second Wind because healing isn’t linear, and I didn’t want the record to feel like I just popped out and was like, ‘I’m not heartbroken anymore.’”
Not surprisingly, Kay, who pay attention to every detail of her career, has the songs in a specific order on Second Wind, one that beautifully tell her story of healing and rising from the ashes of her heartbreak, following her divorce from her first husband.
“I put a lot of time and effort into the sequencing of the record so you could really feel that and feel me trust somebody again with your heart,” Kay says. “I let the armor fall. I just want to be that light at the end of the tunnel for people.”
How Rocko Beall Inspires Alexandra Kay’s ‘Second Wind’ Album
Kay has been vocal that it’s Beall who has inspired many of the songs on Second Wind, including ‘Measure Of A Man,” “Feminine Energy,” “The Last,” and more.
“It was a very conscious decision to describe what it felt like opening my heart again to someone else,” Kay tells Billboard. “I was very much living that, so I was like, ‘Let me just start writing love songs,’ which I had never done. You don’t just flip a switch and automatically you’re trusting and open to love again. I wanted to take people through that process.”

What Alexandra Kay Says About ‘Second Wind’
On social media, Kay says that Second Wind is about her journey, one she shared with the world, going from heartache to hope.
“We healed through the first album, now we grow together,” Kay writes. For an artist who has boldly shared her entire story with the world, Second Wind is a triumphant new chapter.
“This record represents growth out of a time when my whole life was just falling apart,” Kay tells Rolling Stone. “I feel like I’m giving a lot of hope to a lot of people who connected with the last record… The same women that I held in my arms that were bawling their eyes out because they were leaving their relationship are now, two years later, introducing me to their new boyfriends.”
