Allie Colleen Shares the Brave Story Behind ‘Honest Man’ [EXCLUSIVE]

Allie Colleen has a lot of new music she is eager to share in 2023, including her latest single, “Honest Man.” The song is Allie’s unfiltered reflection of the ways gender roles can get in the way, especially when it comes to love and romance.

“‘Honest Man’ is something that I cared about for so long,” Allie tells Everything Nash. “I’ve always just been different in that way. I don’t know if it was because I had such a privileged upbringing, to where it was never a question that I couldn’t pay for dinner. And all of those gender roles that we all just conform with so much in culture, I think that they’re beautiful and they’re kind, but I don’t think that they’re always necessary. I love to take my partner to dinner.”

It was in thinking about how marriage proposals are always the man’s responsibility, and finding it odd when a woman does the asking, which led to “Honest Man.”

“I don’t accept those two narratives,” Allie admits. “Absolutely not. I’ve had a lot of girlfriends who for years just talked about, ‘Is he gonna ask me yet? Is he gonna ask me yet?’ I was like, ‘Go ask him! What an honor would that be if you told him that you wanted to spend the rest of your life together with him.’ Men deserve that also. So getting to sit down in a room and write ‘Honest Man’ was such a privilege for me because it’s something that means so much to me.

“I would be so honored to propose to a man one day and just have that intimacy between each other,” she continues. “And also, have him be so proud that he was asked by me to marry him, as opposed to when his guys go, ‘How’d you do it man?’ And he goes, ‘Oh, she asked me.’ I don’t want him to say it under his breath. I want him to tell everybody how I asked him to marry  me.”

Allie is thrilled to see the fan reaction to “Honest Man,” but she’s also excited about another new song, “Tattoos,” which she plans to release before summer.

“It’ll be a really wonky release for me, ’cause it’s a full-on pop song,” Allie reveals. “But I’m very excited about it. It’s a very sexy pop song that just, again, paints me as I want to be painted, which is just equally as feminine as it is masculine, and just asking for exactly what I want. I love it and I’m very excited about it.”

Allie is not only excited to be releasing music that is meaningful to her, but also release music that might go against the grain of what people expect from a female artist. Fortunately, she’s had a good example to help lead the way within the genre.

“It’s so cool now to be in this independent era of young females, and hearing them put out what they want to put out, and what they want to sing about,” says the singer. “I’m very excited to see what we get to continue to sing about. I think Ashley McBryde‘s been a huge trailblazer in that for us too. It’s not the same narratives you’ve heard a hundred times, sung by females. As rad as they are, it’s all new stuff. I love country music.”
