Ashley McBryde Releases Honest and Personal ‘The Devil I Know’ Album

Ashley McBryde‘s new album is out! The Arkansas native just released The Devil I Know, 11 songs that show who McBryde is, and the evolution she has gone through as a songwriter and artist in the years since her freshman Girl Going Nowhere was released in 2018.

“We can’t wait for you to dig into these songs that found a home on The Devil I Know,”  McBryde says. “Every decision that went into it had to pass a gut check, and I’m proud to say this entire record does just that. Thanks for coming along with us on this journey – we’re so glad you’re here.”

The Devil I Know includes McBryde’s Top 25 single, “Light On In The Kitchen,” which she wrote with Jessi Alexander and Connie Harrington.

“We all kind of stopped,” McBryde recalls to CMT, speaking of the moment when Harrington mentioned the idea for the song, which was written during the challenges of the pandemic. “We decided that’s what we were going to hunt with that day. I was like, ‘Well, there’s always a light on in my mama’s kitchen, both of her sisters, both sets of grandparents, and there’s always one on in mine.’ Then we started uncovering other things like the line about local honey will keep your nose from running.”

When announcing The Devil I Know, the Grand Ole Opry member previously said that she was, perhaps surprisingly, inspired by the criticism she and her music have received when creating what became The Devil I Know.

“‘Y’all are too country.’ We leaned into that – more country it is,” McBryde explained. “‘Y’all are awfully rock-leaning for a country artist.’ Is that so? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. ‘Last thing y’all need is another tender, finger-pickin’ song.’ Oh? Tender makes you uneasy, cowboy? I hear you. Let’s see how much more tender we can be. We listened to all those opinions and said, ‘I hear you. I understand what you’re saying.’ But sadly, there’s no room on the record for your opinion. We’ll do what we want.”

McBryde has a lot to celebrate besides a new album. The singer-songwriter is nominated for three CMA Awards: for Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year, for Ashley McBryde Presents: Lindeville; and Music Video of the Year, for “Light On In The Kitchen.

McBryde will embark on her headlining The Devil I Know Tour on October 7 in Mobile, Alabama. Find music and tour dates at AshleyMcBryde.com.
