Chris Young Explains Why David Bowie Is a Writer on ‘Young Love and Saturday Nights’

Chris Young is sharing more details about his current single, “Young Love and Saturday Nights,” out now. The song was written by Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure and Josh Thompson, with rock icon David Bowie also being credited as a writer, thanks to a guitar lick used in Young’s feel-good new track.

“‘Young Love and Saturday Nights,’ obviously that lick is “Rebel Rebel,'” Young explains in a video shared on social media. “So, they decided to create something new, using that lick, and not picking up a sample, but using that to create a brand-new song. [Bowie] is a songwriter on this song. He is credited as a writer, because they used the lick from “Rebel Rebel.” That was something that was not completely intentional.

“The other writers on it — I’m not a writer on this song, I just produced the track with a couple of friends, and obviously sing it,” he adds. “But I’m really honored that they trusted me with it. You guys are blowing it up right now.”

Not everyday you get to cut a country song with David Bowie credited as a writer. Thankful to have been trusted to release this one!!! 🎸

Loved having the opportunity to give this guitar to a special fan this past weekend. Hope you enjoy it 🤘

Young had a Bowie sticker on his guitar, which he then signed and gave as a surprise to a fan during one of his recent shows. The Grand Ole Opry member knew as soon as he heard “Young Love and Saturday Nights” that he wanted to include it on his next album.

“When I first heard this song, I immediately connected with the groove and the lyrics with nods to so many things I can personally relate to,” Young says. “It made me think back to when I first got started playing country dive bars and it was the same kind of thing. I drove a beat-up truck to and from gigs where I played music hoping the audiences would relate… and if I’m being honest, hoping the girls would like it too.

“Young love and Saturday nights are things that just go together, and this feels like one of those big summer songs where you just want to roll the windows down, crank up the volume, and just drive around to it,” he continues.

Young is currently enjoying a Top 10 hit with his latest single, “Looking For You,” which will also be part of his next record.

“This actually just came from a place of, sometimes you’re looking for love and can’t find it,” Young says of “Looking For You.” “And then sometimes you’re like, ‘I give up,’ and it just smacks you in the face like a freight train out of nowhere. And I think a lot of people have been through that before where they just see somebody walk in, even if they weren’t looking for anyone, they just find someone and it’s like, ‘This is perfect.’ And so that was kind of the genesis of the idea of this song.”
