Colin Stough Shares the Story Behind 'White Trash,' Talks New Album [EXCLUSIVE]

Colin Stough has a new song, out now. The American Idol alum recently released “White Trash,” a song Stough wrote with Jamie Collazo and Kenny Whitmire, inspired by his own life. Stough says his biological dad would call him and his mother “white trash” when he was a child.

“I thought about writing it a few times, and then I never did,” Stough tells Everything Nash. “And then I had a buddy, he just kind of kept using the words ‘white trash, white trash, white trash.’ Not towards me, but just towards everything. So I kind of took it as a sign that I needed to write it. We went in the next day with Jamie Collazo and Kenny Whitmire. We wrote the song like an hour and a half, I think it was. It just turned out to be something great.”

Stough wasn’t necessarily hurt by his father’s unkind words, which he acknowledges were how his dad perceived their lifestyle at the time.

“I guess a lot of people would’ve had their feelings hurt about it. But it didn’t really hurt my feelings. He looked at us one way, because we were the double-wide fairytale,” Stough says with a laugh. “He was kind of using it as a hurtful thing, but I took it as a compliment.”

Stough moved from his native Mississippi to Nashville after competing on Season 21 of American Idol in 2023. Although much different than his rural hometown, the 20-year-old loves almost every aspect of living in Music City.

“It’s been really amazing, to be how old I am,” Stough admits. “I’m truly blessed to be here, and just staying motivated. Keeping my feet on the line, and trying to walk that same line at the same time. It’s been amazing. I’ve met so many great writers, so many great people. I’ve built a brand-new team. It is just insane at the amount of work that it takes to do this. And, really, just how much effort that we’ve put in. It’s all been great.

“I have zero complaints at all besides the traffic. The traffic kind of sucks,” he adds with a chuckle. “Traffic is terrible.”

Stough has already released two EPs, and is now working on a full-length record, one he says will be out in 2025.

“We’re working on an album this year,” reveals the singer. “We’ve kind of slowed down on the road, just to get that material right. Because something that I’ve really honed in this year on is my sound, and really who I want to be. I care a lot about the material, and I want it to sound right. I’ll send a song back to mix, probably five or six times, before I really just am in love with it. So we’ve got an album coming, and it’s gonna be great. It’s gonna be awesome. It is definitely gonna be a good year.”
