Garth Brooks, Mickey Guyton Perform for Gladys Knight at Kennedy Center Honors

Garth Brooks and Mickey Guyton were among the musical guests at the recent Kennedy Center Honors, with the two country artists paying tribute to musical icon Gladys Knight.

Brooks, who was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2020, performed  “Midnight Train to Georgia” for Knight, while Guyton performed “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.”

Guyton admitted she was nervous about performing in front of Knight, especially singing a song that is so loved by so many.

“It was such an emotional moment for me, because I love Gladys so much,” she said backstage. “Singing such an iconic song, that was really nerve-wracking. But then when I just looked at her, and sang it to her, it kind of helped with the nerves. We air-hugged at the end. It was just beautiful.”

Guyton grew up admiring Knight, and for a lot more than just her musical talent.

“it’s the voice first. It’s her voice and her spirit, and her energy is what has inspired me,” Guyton explained. “Her being a strong woman, backed up by men with The Pips was just such an iconic thing. And what she went through with all the civil rights — just everything. She has just triumphed through so much. And no matter what obstacles came her way, her voice always carried her through. And I think that’s awesome.”

Guyton admitted she was a bit starstruck to be joining so many celebrities at the Kennedy Honors ceremony.

“I never thought I’d get to be here,” Guyton conceded. “Getting on a bus with Julia Roberts and Sean Penn was a lot different for me, a girl who comes from  Nashville. But the arts is just so important to the world. It’s what keeps the world going, no matter what is happening in our country, which obviously there’s a lot that’s happening. Art really does carry you through, and it’s an honor to be a part of.”

Amy Grant was also one of this year’s recipients. She was honored with musical tributes by both Sheryl Crow and The Highwomen. Other honorees included U2, George Clooney, and composer and conductor Tania León. The show is available at CBS.com.
