George Birge Shares the Story Behind His ‘That Drink’ Duet With Neal McCoy [EXCLUSIVE]

George Birge has a new song out now, and it’s with a country superstar. The Texas native just released “That Drink,” a song that took on an entirely new meaning, when Neal McCoy offered to sing on the track with Birge.

“’90s country is cool again,” Birge tells Everything Nash. “It’s making a comeback. I think it’s hitting a new generation in like nineties countries. It raised me. It’s really in the core of my DNA. Fom my formative years when I was discovering music and songwriting and all that stuff, it was these ’90s country songs that really resonated with me and made me want to be a country artist.

“And so, as I saw ’90s country starting to make a comeback and get traction and be cool again, I was like, ‘Well, I’m not missing this boat,” he continues. “This is my favorite.’ So I sat down — this was not even two months ago — I sat down and said, ‘I’m gonna rewrite my favorite ’90s country song. Maybe it’s just for me as an exercise of passion.’ I didn’t know it was gonna see the light of day.”

Birge made “That Drink” a tribute to his favorite decade of music, putting in ten “Easter eggs” as he calls them, nods to some of his favorite ’90s songs, including McCoy’s “Wink.” Birge posted it on social media, unaware that it would reach the ears of McCoy, who quickly volunteered to join Birge on the song.

“It ended up getting like 500,000 views in a day,” Birge remembers. “It went mildly viral, and people started commenting that I needed to finish the song. So I could tell there was some stickiness there. And then, the next day I get a call from a No Caller ID number and in Nashville, you’ll get a spam warning on your phone, so you know not to answer it, or you’ll get a number that you don’t have, so you know not to answer it, but if you get a No Caller ID number in this town, it’s usually somebody famous. And so I was like, ‘All right, I’m gonna answer this, see who it is.’ I answered the phone and he was like, ‘Hey man, this is Neil McCoy,’ and I about spit out my drink.”

McCoy told Birge that someone sent him the video, and said he wanted to join Birge on the fun track.

“He was like, ‘I wanna be a part of this. I’m gonna drive to Nashville and I wanna sing on this song with you. I love it,'” Birge recounts. “And he did. Three days later, we’re in the studio recording the song. It was just instant. And I think within two months of writing it, we had it out. It has just taken off like wildfire, and I’m seeing all these people taking the music and making their own videos out of it; I’m getting tagged in 20 videos a day of people either doing line dances to it, or listening to it at a bar with their friends, or on the golf course or the pool. It resonates with other people.

“As an artist and as a writer and a performer, you always get self-conscious of, ‘I know this is special to me, but how’s it gonna land with other people?'” he adds. “And,  to have it out there have Neal’s stamp of approval on it, him singing it with me and then just seeing it take off like wildfire coming out into the world, I feel pretty lucky right now.”
