Lauren Alaina has a Top 10 single with “All My Exes,” her uptempo duet with Chase Matthew. Alaina wrote “All My Exes” with Ben Johnson, Jimmie Gutch, and Whitney Phillips, which is part of her latest Stages album, out now.

Alaina has her husband, Cameron Arnold, to thank for getting Matthew on the song.

“I adore him. He’s like family to us,” Alaina tells Everything Nash. “He’s Uncle Chase in our house. Benny loves him as well. I went out on tour with Chase and Jason Aldean the summer I lost my dad, so it was 2024. We hadn’t met Chase yet, but my husband, Cameron, is a really big fan of Chase’s. And they obviously became best friends. They’re very good buds now.”

How Lauren Alaina Got Chase Matthew On “All My Exes”

Not only did Arnold become good friends with Matthew, but he also got Matthew to sing on the song.

“So I had written this song a couple years before, and it was Cameron’s favorite,” Alaina says. “And I’m like, ‘I write you songs all the time. Your favorite song of mine is the one about my exes. Okay, Cameron.’ But he was like, ‘You have to do this song. I’m just telling you, this will be a huge song for you. You’ve never done anything like it. I’m just telling you, this is a hit song.’ Well, we go on tour with Jason Aldean. I have no plans to cut this song, put this song on the record. We’re not going this direction at all.

“And Cameron played it for Chase, and was like, ‘You have to do this song with Lauren. I’m telling you, it’s a hit,'” she continues. “And then Chase was like, ‘What? Yeah, I’m in. Let’s do this.’ So then Cameron came to me and said, ‘You should play that song for Chase. I bet he would love it.’ He had already committed to doing it to Cameron. They let me think it was my idea, which was a smart thing.”

With “All My Exes” already such a big hit, Alaina jokes that Arnold expects to have a say in her future music as well.

“Now my husband thinks he gets to pick all the songs on the album, because he was right,” Alaina says. “I haven’t had a song in the Top 10 in years. I mean, call it a comeback, ladies and gentlemen. I cannot even believe this is happening. The momentum I have in my career is something that I haven’t had in quite a few years, and I just feel so grateful for the time that I spent creating the music, getting the album right, and this song kind of teeing up everything for us. We’re really hopeful for another number one, so we’ll see.”

Lauren Alaina’s ‘Stages’ Album

“All My Exes” is one of 17 songs on Stages, a record that Alaina is rightfully proud to have created.

“I actually named the album after I had the project finished,” Alaina says. “Which, usually going into an album process, I kind of have an idea. Like for the Road Less Traveled album, obviously I wanted to name it Road Less Traveled. But for this one, I recorded this music over four years. I’ve been working on this project with Big Loud since I signed over with them. And so much of my life has changed in that time.

“I became a mother,” she remarks. “I got married. I lost my dad very unexpectedly. Those are really, really big life changes. And I recorded music before those things happened, and then I recorded music as those things were happening, and after they happened. I turned the album in, and was listening to the music, and I was like, ‘What am I trying to say here?’ And the word ‘Stages’ came up.”
