Luke Bryan Reveals Lessons He Learned From His Own Father

Luke Bryan doesn’t speak much about his father, but he certainly learned plenty from him. Bryan, himself a father of two, reveals the lessons he learned from own dad, which he now passes on to his sons.

“I always just go back to the life lessons that always started either in a fishing boat or hunting somewhere,” Bryan says. “And that’s why I’ve always kind of been a champion of those types of behaviors, certainly with your boys and your children, because you get to spend time and hand down values. My dad was always big on just hard work and being good to people, and a handshake is the contract. A handshake is your bond, your word. His famous saying always was, ‘Do something right the first time and you won’t have to go back and do it over again.’ I won’t say I batted a thousand perfectly on that, but I’ve kind of tried to live by that.“

Bryan released a song, “Jesus ‘Bout My Kids,” on his Mind of a Country Boy album, in honor of his 17-year-old son Bo and 14-year-old Tate, whom he shares with his wife, Caroline.

“[It’s the] first time I’ve really ever certainly stated Jesus in there,” Bryan tells Taste of Country of the song, which was written by Tucker Beathard, Jeff Hyde, Brad Rempel and Ben Stennis.

“I’m proud of this song,” Bryan notes. “This is a song that I could go to any church of this world of ours, any Christian church, and really sing this song and it can be interpreted very Christian-like.”

“I think it’s a beautifully written song that every parent can really relate to,” he adds. “Especially raising your kids in a Christian household, which is what my wife and I strive to do.”

Bryan and Caroline also raised his nephew, Til, after both Bryan’s sister, Kelly, and her husband Ben, passed away. He also helps support his two nieces, Til’s older sisters, as well.

“After they lost obviously my sister and their father, we let Til, Tilden, my nephew, came to live with us full-time,” Bryan recalls to Nightline. “The girls were in their college and high school years. My wife has sacrificed so much. When you’re dealing with girls that are 21 [and] 17, they got a lot of drama going on. Thank God we were in a position where we could do all of that. I look at Til, and then I look at my oldest son, Bo, and Tate. They are brothers. They fight like brothers, they love like brothers.

“And if I can run around this world and people hear my story and they can see me smiling and trying to have positivity through it all, maybe it can inspire people to get up out of bed and get rocking,” he adds.

Bryan is currently on his Mind of a Country Boy Tour. He is also working on a new album, as his current single, “Country Song Came On,” is in the Top 15.

“I’m on tour right now,” Bryan tells The Tennesseean. “I’m actively writing songs. People always ask me, ‘Are you working on a new album?’ I don’t think I ever stop really working on a new album. I’m always trying to write a little bit and find songs. My current single, ‘Country Song Came On,’ is nearing the Top 10 right now, which I’m excited about. But the bottom line is, get in the studio at some point and record some new music, and just keep doing the deal. Keep enjoying being a country music singer.”
