hey guys it's Gail with Everything Nash
0:03
here with the amazing Karen Waldrip so
0:05
good to see you too i got the blue going
0:08
on with pockets i need everybody to see
0:11
that I have pockets that's important to
0:12
know but that's not what we're going to
0:14
talk about we're going to talk about you
0:16
um let's start with The Voice because
0:18
you have been releasing music before i
0:20
knew of you from years ago and then you
0:22
went on The Voice talk about that
0:23
experience oh my gosh The Voice was a
0:25
whirlwind it was amazing i'm sure you've
0:28
talked to other artists that have gotten
0:29
the experience it was such a great
0:32
experience like I learned so much you
0:35
know and that's the biggest thing it's
0:36
like when you go do something like that
0:38
you're walking into it completely like
0:40
clueless of what's going to go on or how
0:43
things are going to go down or what
0:44
songs you're going to sing or what
0:45
you're going to wear you have no idea so
0:47
it also taught me flexibility you know
0:50
I've I've already been flexible because
0:51
we tour a lot you know being on the
0:53
highway you got to be flexible but the
0:55
boys really helped be really flexible
0:57
because you just had to roll with the
0:58
punches you know you got your schedule
1:00
that morning it was pretty wild you know
1:02
you just kind of had to roll with it um
1:05
but just a great experience and it just
1:06
expanded my my already existing fan base
1:09
and made it even bigger and just it was
1:11
it's just been really good how were you
1:13
with the experience i have talked to a
1:15
few other Voice um winners and
1:17
contestants you are like gone like
1:20
you're in a hotel you're gone for weeks
1:22
how were you with that i actually
1:24
personally did well with it um but I can
1:27
see why maybe other people wouldn't do
1:28
well with it but the reason why I liked
1:30
it so much is because we're used to
1:31
being out on the highway with the pool
1:33
trailer loading in playing different
1:35
clubs every night playing staying in
1:38
different cities every night trying to
1:40
keep up with what time zone we're in so
1:42
for me it was a big huge relief to be in
1:45
the same room where I could line up my
1:47
garments and put my makeup out and and
1:49
just be still and uh and they gave us a
1:52
curfew and everybody else was like "I
1:53
hate this." I'm like "This is awesome."
1:56
Yes you know because on the road you
1:57
know we might be out until midnight or
1:59
one o'clock in the morning so to have to
2:02
be in your room by 10:00 okay sign me up
2:04
you know I would like that curfew but
2:06
let's go you know I was in bed early it
2:09
was just fabulous doing my skin care was
2:12
it was a great experience maybe I should
2:13
go no I'm not going it was great before
2:15
we get to your music we do have to talk
2:16
about your coaches on the Voice Dan and
2:17
Shay i mean not nice humans at all i
2:20
know right they're the best aren't they
2:21
just the best great they are the best
2:24
they were so good to me they gave me a
2:26
ton of time a ton of counsel a ton of um
2:30
advice and the biggest thing I learned
2:32
from Shay Shay if you're watching is his
2:35
timing you know his musical timing is
2:37
impeccable and I'm like is he listening
2:40
to a metronome all the time like how is
2:42
he so
2:43
on and it was just really impressive and
2:48
I didn't really realize that until I
2:50
sang with him before that I was just
2:53
listening to his stuff or their stuff
2:55
and his voice and and then when I was
2:57
singing with him I kind of heard my
3:00
vocal being a little looser and so it it
3:02
taught me like you need to you know so
3:05
now when I get on stage I pay more
3:06
attention to my timing you know and
3:08
that's such a small thing but I think it
3:10
does go back to listening to a metronome
3:13
and somebody just shared something
3:15
recently that I'm going to start doing
3:17
you can pull all the songs into an app
3:20
here we go dorky music conversation you
3:23
can pull them into an app now and put
3:25
the metronome in the app so as you're
3:28
listening to your music and the you
3:30
getting ready or doing your hair instead
3:31
of hearing just the song you're hearing
3:33
the
3:34
interesting so think that'll help too
3:36
okay but we're always trying to learn
3:38
you know every every day thank you Shay
3:41
um let's talk about blue cowboy boots
3:43
yeah give me the story behind it come on
3:45
i got them on right now he does um Blue
3:47
Cowboy Boots is this really fun light
3:51
feelgood kicking song you know and we
3:54
wanted a a summer kickoff song you know
3:56
we wanted a song that really fired
3:59
people up whether they're out on the
4:01
boat in the sunshine or whether they're
4:03
having family over if they're driving
4:04
around in their Mustang so blue cowboy
4:07
boots the blue boot
4:09
represents freedom and and being an
4:12
individual and um escaping the problem
4:15
because you're not blue anymore because
4:17
you're wearing the blue cowboy boots so
4:19
the blue cowboy boot is meant to like
4:22
represent having fun and and saying "No
4:25
you're not going to treat me like that
4:27
i'm gonna go uh dance in these boots and
4:30
have a great time." Yes so that's really
4:32
all it is people like "Can you tell me
4:34
about it?" I'm like well it doesn't take
4:35
long it's a song about boots and about
4:38
having fun and about being free and
4:41
being expressive and um me as a musician
4:45
I had a pair of blue cowboy boots i wore
4:47
them all over and I noticed that out of
4:51
everything I've ever owned I got more
4:53
compliments on the blue cowboy boot of
4:55
anything I've ever owned so I'm like
4:57
there's probably something special about
4:59
these boots so then my coowriter and I
5:01
Ed Hill wrote Blue Cowboy Boots uh he's
5:04
incredible he's had so many hits a few a
5:07
few so he's a mentor to me um a
5:09
coowriter with me and also he came up in
5:12
the honky tonk world i came up in the
5:14
honky tonk world so we had a lot of
5:17
words that we were able to pull and to
5:18
describe the feeling of dancing on a
5:21
dance floor and you know a tall drink of
5:24
water might take a shine in me i mean
5:27
you got to play honky tonks to get those
5:29
lyrics right and this is on an upcoming
5:31
album yes so these days well at least
5:34
for me um we release Louisiana Hurricane
5:37
then we release Fix It then we release
5:39
Blue Cowboy Boots so once we do Six or
5:42
eight then we will put it into a record
5:43
so we're we're slowly releasing the
5:45
record we heard it here so when you were
5:47
on The Voice when you got off you were
5:50
top five yes were you good with that i
5:52
was disappointed okay um I wanted to win
5:55
i'm not going to lie i went out to the
5:57
show with a motto and it was no option
6:00
because I had already been out on the
6:02
road i had already toured i already
6:04
played clubs so I really didn't have an
6:07
option but to bring 100% so I brought
6:10
100% to the workouts to the rehearsals
6:13
to wardrobe to every possible thing I
6:16
could do I brought 100% um and every
6:19
morning I listened to a song by Kevin
6:21
Gates called No Option and it just
6:23
brainwashed myself to convince myself
6:25
that I wasn't going to get distracted by
6:28
somebody inviting me to the beach or
6:30
going to Disney like I was there to get
6:32
into the finale and that was my goal
6:34
when we got out on the stage and they
6:36
said I was fifth I was very disappointed
6:39
i felt like um that was like I was like
6:42
man you know I I was at least wanting
6:44
like third or second um but I was very
6:46
excited and happy for Asher his voice is
6:49
out of this world and he deserves every
6:53
ounce of success awesome well we're
6:55
going to talk more when your album comes
6:56
out because I am now invested in your
6:58
career oh thank you yay karen well
