Hey guys, it's Gail with Everything Nash
0:03
here with Colin Sty. So good to see you,
0:05
my friend. Good to see you, man. How you
0:08
been? I'm good. We haven't talked in a
0:10
hot minute. We have a lot to talk about.
0:11
What do you want to talk about first?
0:12
New music? Don't matter to me. What?
0:14
Whatever y'all want. Well, let's do
0:16
White Trash because I really like that
0:18
song. Give me the story behind it, man.
0:21
So
0:23
really white trash. You know, the song
0:25
was kind of written about just kind of
0:26
how a term my biological dad would call
0:30
me and my mom when I was a kid. And uh I
0:34
kind of thought about writing it a few
0:36
times and then I I never did. And then I
0:38
had a buddy, he just kind of kept using
0:40
the word white trash, white trash, white
0:42
trash. Uh not towards me, but just
0:45
towards everything. So I kind of took it
0:46
as a sign that I needed to write it. And
0:49
uh we went in the next day with Jamie
0:50
Collazo and Kenny Whitmire and uh we
0:53
wrote the song like an hour and a half I
0:55
think it was and uh man it just it just
0:58
turned out to be something great
1:00
and then we put it out. Yeah. So you
1:03
said your biological dad. Do you mean it
1:05
was it a bad connotation or what are
1:07
your thoughts on that? I mean you know I
1:11
guess a lot of people would have been
1:12
hurt you know had their feelings hurt
1:13
about it but you know it didn't really
1:15
hurt my feelings. you know, he kind of
1:16
he looked at us one way, you know, cuz,
1:18
you know, we we're the, you know, double
1:20
wide fairy tale and, you know, stuff
1:22
like that. But, uh, yeah, I mean, he,
1:25
you know, he was kind of using it as a
1:27
hurtful thing, but I kind of took it as
1:29
a compliment. So, yeah, you did. Um, can
1:32
I'm going to get to new album and all of
1:34
that, but we've talked before, but now
1:37
American Idol is a few years past.
1:39
You're really part of the country music
1:42
scene. You live in Nashville. talk about
1:43
your journey in the last couple of
1:44
years. Uh, you know, it's been it's been
1:47
really amazing, you know, to be how old
1:49
I am. You know, I'm just I'm truly
1:52
blessed to be here and, uh, you know,
1:54
just staying motivated and, you know,
1:57
keeping keeping my feet on the line and,
1:59
you know, trying to walk that same line
2:01
at the same time. You know, it's been
2:03
amazing. Uh, you know, I've met so many
2:05
great writers, so many great people. Uh,
2:07
you know, I've built a brand new team.
2:10
Um, you know, it's just insane at the
2:13
amount of work, uh, that it takes to do
2:15
this and, you know, really just how
2:18
much, you know, effort, you know, we've
2:20
put in and, um, it's it's just it's all
2:24
been great. You know, I have zero
2:25
complaints at all besides the traffic.
2:27
The traffic uh, kind of sucks.
2:31
Traffic is terrible. The traffic is
2:33
terrible. So, has there been any
2:36
disappointments? Because I know when we
2:37
talked last it was such a brand new
2:39
exciting chapter but now like the work
2:42
is happening. So is there any downside
2:44
that you found?
2:46
You know not really. You know you know
2:48
we've had you know we've had some stuff
2:50
you know not really not go our way
2:53
sometimes uh you know in this industry.
2:55
But you know I don't look at that as a
2:57
disappointment or a downfall. I look at
2:59
it as another piece of motivation you
3:01
know to kind of keep my head down and
3:03
just work a little harder and work a
3:04
little harder. Um, really there hasn't
3:08
been any, you know. I mean, I guarantee
3:10
you what I do for a living now is way
3:12
better than, you know, what I used to
3:15
do, you know. I mean, that's a very good
3:19
point. You have two EPs out already,
3:21
right? We're working on a new album.
3:23
Yes, ma'am. So, you know, we got we got
3:25
two EPs out, um, which were, you know,
3:28
awesome. There's awesome material on
3:30
those. And, um, we're working on an
3:33
album this year. you know, we've kind of
3:34
slowed down on the road, you know, just
3:36
to get that material right. Uh because
3:38
that's something that I've really honed
3:39
in this year on is my sound and and
3:42
really who I want to be, you know, and
3:45
and I just I'm really
3:48
I care a lot about the material and I
3:50
want it to sound right. I mean, I've
3:51
sent a song back to Mix uh probably five
3:54
or six times before. I really just am in
3:57
love with it, you know. Um, so yeah, you
4:00
know, we've got an album coming and it's
4:03
it's it's going to be great. It's going
4:04
to be awesome. It's going to be it's
4:05
definitely going to be a good year. What
4:07
can you tell us about the album?
4:10
Get ready to rock and roll a little bit
4:12
cuz we're kind of we're kind of taking
4:13
it on back to Mississippi a little bit,
4:15
getting in them swamps a little more and
4:17
uh I love that. So,
4:20
okay. How about touring? I know you have
4:21
some dates on the calendar and you've
4:23
also opened for some like really cool
4:25
people. I'm just saying.
4:27
Yeah, we've uh you know on the touring
4:29
aspect of it, man, you know, last year,
4:31
you know, we did awesome. You know, we
4:32
did a bunch of days. I think we were in
4:35
Canada for 38 days and then come back
4:37
and did 16 dates in the States and then
4:39
me and Will Mosley did uh 11 dates. Um
4:44
you know, and
4:46
this year, you know, it's really, you
4:49
know, I feel like when you get here, you
4:51
know, you're worried about getting out
4:52
and getting out and getting out and
4:54
getting out and touring and touring and
4:55
touring. And I love the tour. It's so
4:57
much fun. I love being my band. You
4:59
know, it's just like a big family and
5:00
you know, meeting everybody and stuff
5:02
like that. And you know, this year we do
5:05
have some dates and we are going to we
5:06
are going to add on to that. Uh and we
5:08
are going to get more. Um but really,
5:11
you know, just focused on the material.
5:14
I don't I don't know why that has been
5:15
like such a major change and curve in my
5:18
mindset. Um but yeah, you know, this
5:21
year uh yeah, the calendar is not as
5:23
slam. Uh, and it's not necessarily a bad
5:25
thing cuz, you know, I would rather take
5:27
my time and do something right than, you
5:29
know, rush it and have to do it twice.
5:31
Um, and that's and that's just kind of
5:34
really, you know, who I am and, you
5:36
know, cuz it's what the people are going
5:38
to be listening to. So, I want them to
5:40
hear something that's, you know, awesome
5:41
in my opinion. Well, anything you do, I
5:43
think is going to be awesome. Do you
5:45
talk do you keep up with any of your
5:46
American Idol people? I just got to
5:48
interview AM a couple weeks ago and I
5:49
love him. Do you ever get to talk to
5:51
them? Yes, man. you know, I love him to
5:54
death. We were we were actually talking,
5:55
uh, you know, not long ago and he was,
5:57
you know, he was telling me and I was
5:58
pumped for him because he just made his
6:00
Opri debut. Um, and then, uh, I talked
6:03
to him and John Wayne Hatfield probably
6:05
the most. I talked to them to the most.
6:07
John Wayne, man, he's he was on my
6:09
season. Uh, we met at auditions. You
6:11
know, we just we've hung out ever since.
6:15
Okay. Well, I love that about you. I
6:16
love what a hard worker you are. I'm
6:18
just gonna throw that out there. I feel
6:20
like a lot of people could learn from
6:21
you, my friend.
6:24
I don't know if you want to learn
6:25
anything from me, I'll be honest with
6:27
you. But, you know, we we we do we do
6:31
try to work hard. Um, and you know, it's
6:34
it's not it's not really just, you know,
6:36
about for it's just kind of who I am,
6:38
you know, where I come from. You know,
6:40
you really you really got to work for
6:42
everything you got. And, you know, I
6:44
come up here and, you know, the first
6:46
week, you know, it was like, all right,
6:48
you know, you're right. You're right.
6:49
from 11 to 3 or 4, you know, and you're
6:53
done for the day. And I was like, man,
6:56
you know, that's that's really easy.
6:58
That's that's way too easy, you know.
7:00
And uh so then, you know, that's
7:02
whenever I started, you know, getting my
7:03
pen and paper out and just, you know,
7:05
I'll spend my whole entire day just
7:07
finding ways on, you know, how I can be
7:09
better, a better musician. You know,
7:11
I've almost got a schedule planned out
7:13
and I do it every day. you know, some of
7:15
it's playing guitar, some of it's, you
7:17
know,
7:19
starting new music, some of it's calling
7:20
my producer and talking about what's
7:22
going to go on next, you know, and
7:25
what's crazy is that I'm not really a
7:26
big planner, but that's just kind of how
7:28
I I try to fill my day because I would
7:30
drive myself crazy if all I had to do is
7:32
work from 11:00 to 4:00 every day.
7:35
Do you now that you're in Nashville or
7:37
even when you're not in Nashville, do
7:38
you like when people recognize you?
7:41
Yeah, you know, so when I first come to
7:44
town, you know, I was hanging out with a
7:45
lot of artists and stuff like that. And,
7:47
you know, a lot of those artists, you
7:49
know, they were in position in positions
7:51
that I would honestly kill to be in.
7:53
And, you know, they kind of acted like
7:55
it was a void to them and kind of like a
7:56
bother to them. And uh so I stopped
7:59
hanging out with them. And uh the reason
8:00
for that said is I do love that, you
8:03
know, when people come up to me, whether
8:04
it's, "Hey man, I love your music." or
8:06
hey man, you know, you've changed my
8:08
life or you know that and the DMs and
8:12
you know the messages all that stuff
8:14
that I get. I love all that simply
8:16
because of the fact you know you know as
8:18
what we do for a living man we wouldn't
8:20
have a job if it wasn't for the fans you
8:22
know and that's just point blank and I
8:24
don't know why uh some artists uh don't
8:29
realize that. Um, but yeah, you know, I,
8:32
you know, I just don't I'm not really a
8:34
big fan whenever someone wants to come
8:36
take a picture and, you know, or, you
8:38
know, get a autograph or just even have
8:39
a conversation. You know, it kind of
8:41
aggravates him a little bit. Um, I've
8:44
never understood that. Okay. Well, we'll
8:46
we'll make note of that. Any idea when
8:48
the album's going to come out?
8:51
Very soon. Uh, we're going to we're
8:52
going to roll out some singles. Uh, I
8:54
think our next single is going to come
8:55
out in August. Uh, beginning of August.
8:58
Uh, and we're just going to keep rolling
9:00
from there, you know. All right. Well,
9:03
I'll chat with you anytime. Good to see
9:05
you, my friend. Good to see you. Thank
9:06
you so much. And, uh, thank you for
9:08
having me back. Anytime. Have a good
9:10
one. You, too. or pressure.
