hey guys it's Gail with Home Free here
0:03
in Nashville with my favorites Home Free
0:06
good to see you guys
0:08
how's everyone doing very great we've
0:11
had a nice full week and been working on
0:14
some music videos uh we've been in the
0:15
studio pretty much the last few months
0:17
working on stuff so we've been busy and
0:19
now we're ready to take a break for a
0:21
little bit after you talk to me after we
0:23
talk to you of course yes okay things we
0:25
have to talk about first of all you guys
0:27
played the oprey last night how many
0:28
times have you played the opera 28 we
0:31
think it was our 28th time yeah okay so
0:34
how did it go well it went extra well
0:36
because we brought Secret Weapon Jimmy
0:38
Fortune from the Statler Brothers did
0:40
you not know and we premiered uh our
0:43
version of Elizabeth with him it's our
0:45
first time ever singing it live oh and
0:47
and and Oh brought Down the House
0:50
standing
0:52
his voice is just like nobody else's mhm
0:55
it's crazy i mean I hope I sound half
0:58
that good at 70 he sounds better than
1:01
ever yeah but he doesn't have a five
1:03
octave range like Tim Fel does so he
1:05
doesn't need it so talk about playing
1:08
the opera we've talked about this before
1:09
but 28th time that's like you're
1:12
regulars now we are it was his fourth
1:14
time so he's still in the uh nerves
1:16
phase of the operating i've reached the
1:18
point where my my nervousness was a
1:21
little bit less than my excitement this
1:23
time i was always excited but the nerves
1:25
just really took over this time it was
1:27
like okay I'm I'm happy i'm excited and
1:30
then I got out there and then I got
1:31
really nervous but you know we're we're
1:33
making progress isn't the backstage at
1:36
the opery just like there's nothing else
1:38
in country music like backstage at the
1:40
opery it's so cool we're all so you know
1:43
busy everyone's got their own schedule
1:45
and so it's like the one place that all
1:47
of musicians can just hang out it's a
1:50
it's a reunion every single time you
1:52
know it's the opera or music festivals
1:54
but outside of that we rarely and the
1:56
country music crews we rarely get to
1:58
just hang out and catch up and it it's
2:00
so fun uh let's talk about videos you
2:03
guys are nominated for a telly award how
2:05
many telly awards do you have oh my god
2:07
too many to the good fortune we had the
2:09
good fortune of forgetting yeah we we've
2:11
been lucky with those we And we And
2:13
honestly that's just a testament to our
2:14
team our team always has great ideas and
2:17
puts together these great concepts for
2:18
us that kind of take our vision to the
2:21
the music videos and uh yeah I think
2:24
we're up for people's choice award for
2:26
Skull and Bones this time around that's
2:27
cool which is very cool yeah which are
2:29
fan voted mhm yes okay so fans are going
2:33
to vote for it uh please do you know how
2:36
many you have can you ballpark it
2:40
uh off camera off camera a lot how many
2:44
do we have double digits okay double
2:47
digits we're going to add to that
2:49
collection with this one because fans
2:51
are going to vote I'm sure uh video I am
2:54
not okay coming out Friday friday talk
2:57
what a powerful song talk about doing
3:00
that song yeah I mean it's an incredible
3:02
song it's incredible initiative uh we're
3:05
all you know believers in the importance
3:07
of mental health and mental wellness and
3:10
um you know three of us are married to
3:11
therapists really
3:14
that's an interesting dynamic
3:16
totally coincidental very
3:19
helpful but uh you know May is mental
3:21
health awareness month so we wanted to
3:23
do something special in conjunction with
3:24
that so we decided to put our spin on
3:27
that incredible Jelly Roll song have you
3:29
met Jelly Roll we haven't officially met
3:31
him yet i think so around him bumped
3:33
into him and by him at the at the CMA
3:35
award
3:38
he accidentally
3:42
say "Excuse me Mr roll." Or is it Mr
3:45
jelly i don't know i don't know which
3:47
one it is okay so let's talk about
3:50
mental health a little bit i am not okay
3:51
i've written about that song it's such a
3:53
powerful song what do you guys do for
3:56
your mental health
3:58
a lot i mean a lot of different things
4:00
uh I I tackled a lot of different ways
4:03
even just in the therapeutic sphere um
4:06
you know I I have my own personal
4:08
therapists and I try different like a
4:10
few different modalities as well you
4:11
know I like talk therapy um also like um
4:15
some experiential stuff i've had one
4:17
session of uh um brain spotting and that
4:20
went really well um my wife and I do
4:24
marriage therapist with a couple
4:25
different therapists as well we recently
4:26
started doing ecoin therapy and it is
4:29
magical really yeah i mean we're all
4:33
such advocates like you said for mental
4:34
health and and everybody's journey is so
4:36
different but a big thing that uh is is
4:39
important to us too is is being in the
4:41
music industry and having a musician
4:43
schedule and families at home it's
4:45
that's a huge thing that we've all had
4:47
to deal with too and and yeah so we're
4:49
we're pushing mental health for everyone
4:51
and therapy like we're huge advocates
4:54
for therapy and you can I add Yeah
4:56
please i think one one thing that comes
4:59
up a lot when it comes to therapy and
5:01
those those sorts of experiences for
5:02
people is that it's cost prohibitive for
5:05
a lot of people so I think it's also
5:06
really good to know the things that
5:08
resonate with you as an individual like
5:10
the things that make you feel alive and
5:12
peaceful so like I think for me it's
5:14
like getting my hands in the dirt doing
5:16
some landscaping or going to a body of
5:18
water and just looking out over the
5:20
horizon i think it's really therapeutic
5:22
just things that calm you down that
5:23
allow your head to stop spinning because
5:25
I think that's what happens a lot with
5:26
people that are dealing with mental
5:28
health issues is that you have one
5:30
thought and that spirals to another to
5:31
another so even if you don't have the
5:33
money to see a therapist you can find
5:36
other ways you got to know yourself i
5:38
think I think that's an important thing
5:40
to like be able to be introspective and
5:42
know what you need
5:45
okay you heard it from them take care of
5:46
your mental health um let's talk about
5:49
new music album coming this year that's
5:51
right hey we just turned in the the
5:53
master on Monday oh tell me all about it
5:55
well that's probably all we can tell you
5:59
you can tell me but you'll have to kill
6:01
me what can you tell me about it i will
6:04
say that in some ways this album is a
6:07
departure for us and in other ways not
6:09
at all yeah you're going to get some of
6:11
that same old Home Free that people know
6:13
and love but you know I think our fans
6:17
and and they're I know they're grateful
6:19
for this we put out so much music and
6:21
this one's a way for us to do something
6:23
that's a little bit different not too
6:25
different but a little bit different
6:28
don't you love how perfectly vague this
6:29
is the plot
6:32
thickens um when we talked on the cruise
6:35
when you talked to us on the cruise you
6:37
said that there was a new tour perhaps
6:39
idea coming can we talk about that
6:40
anymore yet uh I'm looking over at
6:43
Chrissy can we talk about the jukebox
6:45
tour okay okay jukebox tour we're not
6:48
going to talk about it yet but we're
6:49
going to find out about it and get back
6:51
to everybody we know the name of it we
6:53
know the name of it and you did tell us
6:54
on camera last time that it might
6:56
involve some more fan participation yeah
6:58
yeah yeah
7:01
and the plot to get excited about when
7:04
you guys tour you know we've talked so
7:05
many times i don't think I've ever asked
7:07
you this when you guys are on the road
7:08
you're in the bus together what are
7:10
different people's roles like who gets
7:11
up early who's the one that gets
7:12
everybody moving who's the one that's
7:14
sloppy what is it like with life on
7:16
Humphrey well I mean we all have
7:18
different schedules like Rob's the first
7:21
one after the show to go i don't even
7:24
see him sometimes i haven't even changed
7:26
my stage outfit and he's already in his
7:28
bunk asleep but the rest of like I'm a
7:30
night owl bastian you're more of a night
7:32
owl for the most part yeah i try and
7:34
stay on the dad schedule a little bit so
7:36
I'm up earliest well both of us are
7:39
usually up pretty early and I go to bed
7:41
the earliest i'm a lot of fun on the
7:42
road
7:43
you sound like you and I would be about
7:45
the same because I don't do late nights
7:47
anymore i think all of us play the role
7:49
of taskmaster in different ways yeah
7:52
like it depends on on what that is um
7:55
it's either that there's one of us kind
7:57
of leading the charge or none of us at
7:58
all that can happen sometimes too where
8:00
we're just all sitting there not doing
8:02
anything we like to do that it's
8:04
important sometimes and I don't think
8:05
there's this I don't think there's a
8:07
sloppy one okay not really yeah I mean
8:09
we're all very like respectful of you
8:11
know each other's needs and the the
8:13
communal space and we've kind of really
8:15
developed this familial vibe out there
8:18
on the road not just us but our crew
8:19
that travels with us and uh you know
8:21
it's where it's where we it's where we
8:22
live so we we try to respect that okay
8:26
and how's it going for you last time we
8:27
talked you were still getting your feet
8:29
wet a little bit how we doing now
8:30
feeling really good i I I was actually a
8:33
little disappointed that we didn't do a
8:35
spring tour because I started to kind of
8:36
miss the bus life these guys are like
8:39
"Calm down new guy." But um no I I
8:42
really I really love it i love any time
8:44
that I get to spend with them and it's
8:47
like I'm still having a lot of new
8:48
experiences you know we're doing a lot
8:50
of press things this week which is the
8:52
most that I've ever done with you guys
8:53
but like everything else I feel really
8:55
well supported and just sitting in a
8:57
room with these guys talking to people
8:58
that I've never met before and I'm just
9:01
encouraged every step of the way i love
9:02
it well we love you being part of
9:04
Humphrey i'm just going to say it okay
9:06
if people want to see you you're playing
9:07
at CMA Fest which is going to be here
9:10
before we know it
9:12
always yeah it always sneaks up on you
9:14
it's such a crazy week uh we've actually
9:17
got our own show at uh City Winery this
9:20
year and it's a special one our 25th
9:24
birthday can rent a car now
9:27
but who's going to be the driver if you
9:29
rent a car not
9:30
it do it okay okay so City Winery 25th
9:34
June 8th that doesn't even 25 years
9:39
does that seem possible to you you know
9:41
you've lived all of them yeah i feel old
9:43
25 of those you were 10 you were 10 when
9:44
Home Free started right
9:48
okay but really 25 years like just sit
9:51
with that for a minute i sit with it
9:53
every day could you have imagined 25
9:56
years ago
9:58
where Home Free would be now hell no no
10:01
no not even close i mean it's uh it's
10:03
been a wild ride for sure like uh you
10:05
know it was a huge struggle early on as
10:07
every musician will probably have a
10:09
similar story of just trying to figure
10:10
out how to do what you're going to do
10:12
and just thankfully through perseverance
10:15
you know one thing leads to another and
10:16
then you meet the right people and then
10:17
you know things happen as long as you
10:19
keep at it and you love to you have the
10:21
same goals and you just you want to
10:22
reach out to more people with your music
10:23
and then just all things everything kind
10:25
of falls into place as you keep trying
10:28
to do it so yeah where do you think Home
10:31
Free would be if not for the Sing Off
10:33
have you gone there in your mind on a
10:35
cruise ship
10:38
fair fair making decent money
10:41
yeah i mean we were doing a full-time
10:43
career for you know the two years before
10:45
that show happened so we had thought we
10:47
had already made it because we were able
10:49
to do this as our day job we probably be
10:51
in a a middle school gymnator yeah
10:54
something like that right now talking to
10:56
kids no listen as someone that wasn't a
10:59
part of the ride I what I see is that
11:00
there still would have been a viral
11:02
YouTube moment that would have
11:04
catapulted the group maybe for all the
11:06
wrong reasons we know but you're you're
11:08
right you're right you're probably right
11:10
with their focus on videos you're
11:12
probably right always been there and I
11:14
and I just love to have been able to
11:16
watch it from the outside and jump back
11:17
in but yeah I think there'd still be
11:20
gymnatorium not quite yet maybe in 10
11:23
years maybe a gymnasium
11:26
okay okay I have to let you guys go
11:27
because you have other things to do
11:28
today besides talk to me but what else
11:30
can we look forward to this year i mean
11:33
you know we release a new single and
11:35
music video about every two weeks and if
11:38
I don't write about it your fans will
11:39
let me know so just have we have another
11:42
collaboration coming out pretty soon
11:44
very exciting you can say with who right
11:46
you can say Oh okay hey we've got a a
11:50
recording with a chapel heart
11:53
mhm and a very very fun music video as
11:56
well you can't not have fun with You
11:58
can't not have fun with them and those
12:01
harmonies together
12:03
okay we're going to definitely talk
12:05
about that later once it comes out okay
12:07
good to see you guys anything else did
12:08
we cover think we need to i think we did
12:10
well y'all go to homefreemusic.com check
12:12
out our tour dates we want to see you on
12:14
the road thanks guys
