hey guys it's Gail with Everything Nash
0:02
backstage at Sam Fest with Maline Merllo
0:04
good to see you good to see you too we
0:06
have things to talk about of course I
0:08
want to go back to the beginning because
0:10
you and I have not spoken in person
0:11
about this songland talk about that
0:14
experience oh my gosh songland was
0:16
incredible um you know it was a show on
0:19
NBC that was like a songwriting
0:21
competition show that just like came
0:23
together so randomly and completely
0:26
changed my life i mean it kicked open so
0:27
many doors as a songwriter and an artist
0:30
and um yeah I just feel like it was a
0:33
gamechanging moment and just a blessing
0:35
from God honestly and game changing
0:38
moment i remember I'm not even joking
0:40
where I was sitting at my desk when I
0:43
got the press release that Lady A was
0:44
releasing Champagne Night which was a
0:46
surprise because they had more singles
0:48
to come off of their album and they
0:51
pivoted
0:52
because they heard Champagne Night and
0:54
wanted to record it talk about that yeah
0:56
so they had a current song at radio at
0:58
the time that was like doing well and no
1:01
other song from that show had ever gone
1:03
to be a radio single or anything so I
1:06
mean there wasn't even like a hope that
1:07
I was thinking about like I had
1:08
absolutely no idea and so I just got an
1:10
email that said they wanted to zoom on
1:12
Monday cuz this was during co this is
1:14
during co I was like okay um and I
1:17
thought they were going to say you know
1:18
we're so excited because it it did I
1:20
think our episode was the most watched
1:22
episode and it got a really great
1:23
reaction i just thought they were going
1:25
to be like this was so great i don't
1:26
know not expecting that and they were
1:28
like yeah we're putting it to radio and
1:30
all my wildest dreams came true and it
1:31
was three week number one song so just
1:33
one of those things that's the magical
1:35
thing about the music industry in
1:37
Nashville it's just like you just never
1:38
know what's going to happen what
1:39
opportunities are going to happen and
1:41
they just got to say yes and show up and
1:44
you know I don't know it was so cool i
1:46
didn't realize till I was googling you
1:48
this week and I don't know how I didn't
1:50
know this you're from Canada talk about
1:52
that yes i grew up um on the west coast
1:55
of Canada kind of just like right above
1:57
Seattle um and yeah I grew up like
2:00
riding horses a pretty small town um and
2:02
then have been in Nashville like eight
2:04
years do you miss it yeah I mean it's
2:06
such a beautiful part of the world and
2:07
my family being over there and that's
2:10
like the main thing i miss them all the
2:12
time it's difficult being away from them
2:14
but they love Nashville and come visit
2:16
all the time i mean I'm from
2:17
Pennsylvania i miss the weather
2:20
cuz it's hot here totally yeah it's very
2:22
hot very humid in the summer new music
2:26
one house down from the girl next door
2:28
what can you tell me yeah so um projects
2:31
called One House Down the Girl Next Door
2:33
and I feel like it just kind of takes
2:34
you through a bit of a journey starting
2:37
kind of in a real heartbreak moment and
2:39
then by the end you kind of end up
2:40
exactly where you're supposed to be and
2:42
really this project is about trusting
2:43
your gut following your instinct and um
2:47
I started writing it there was a few
2:49
songs that just started to kind of make
2:50
sense putting them all together and it
2:51
was cool to do kind of a project that
2:53
told like a real story about a
2:55
relationship and um yeah it's it's a
2:57
really special project really proud of
2:59
it keith Urban yes keith Urban does a
3:02
guitar solo in the title track which is
3:04
crazy i literally just like my I told my
3:08
producer I was like "It sounds like a
3:09
Keith Urban song." like it had that kind
3:11
of energy to it and um my producer Zach
3:14
Crawl knows him and I was like can you
3:16
just ask him and um just went for it and
3:18
he was like sure which is insane because
3:21
Keith Urban is the nicest human i said
3:22
it I said it is the nicest human true i
3:25
also learned something are you the one I
3:27
know you sing you did some background
3:28
vocals for some people and you did Cole
3:30
Swindell's song you're doing that
3:32
fabulous female riff in that song that's
3:34
me yeah y'all that is amazing how Yeah
3:38
um honestly it was a super random
3:41
scenario as well where my producer was
3:43
working on that song and he had this
3:45
idea to have it kind of going in the
3:46
background but because the original
3:48
track is in a different key um Jody
3:50
sounded kind of like a chipmunk and he's
3:52
like "Can you just prove a concept it's
3:54
not you know going anywhere i just want
3:55
to hear what it would sound like to have
3:56
that that voice in the background." And
3:58
so I'm like "Yeah of course." And so I
4:00
just did it randomly when I was over one
4:01
day and it just like sounded cool and he
4:04
was like "Oh I think we're going to add
4:06
it to the track." And boom it was on the
4:07
radio and then I honestly started a bit
4:08
of a background vocal thing i sang on
4:11
Jelly Roll stuff and Dustin stuff and
4:13
Sam Hunt stuff and Connor Smith stuff so
4:16
um yeah just like and I Moonlight as a
4:18
background singer which is really fun i
4:19
really like it a lot shame she's not
4:21
talented okay I got to let you go
4:23
because we all have lots of interviews
4:25
today what else is happening for you
4:26
what can we look forward to from you
4:28
yeah I mean we just put out a brand new
4:29
version of my new kind of focus track
4:31
Middle of the Bed which I love so much
4:33
um and we're just like playing a ton
4:35
this summer and started to kind of write
4:36
for the next project which is so
4:38
exciting and playing the oprey next week
4:40
and so yeah there's a lot of kind of
4:42
exciting things on the horizon and um
4:45
lots to look forward to well I think
4:46
you're fabulous thank you maline Maline
