Taylor Swift Stalker Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison in Nashville

As Taylor Swift was getting ready to perform “Betty” at the 2020 ACM Awards on Wednesday night, September 16, another man was getting ready to go to prison for stalking the superstar. Eric Swarbrick, from Austin, Texas, was sentenced to 30 months in jail for stalking and sending threatening letters to Taylor, at her former record label, Big Machine.

According to MSN, Eric sent more than 40 letters and emails to Big Machine, asking the label’s CEO, Scott Borchetta, to introduce him to the superstar. The letters became more threatening and disturbing over time with Eric personally driving to Nashville on three different occasions to deliver them himself. He also threatened to commit suicide if he could not meet Taylor in person.

This is not Eric’s first time to be arrested for stalking. He was previously arrested in Septemeber of 2018, for interstate stalking and sending interstate communications with the intent to threaten. A little more than a year later, October of 2019, he pleaded guilty as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

Unfortunately, Taylor has had plenty of experience dealing with stalkers. Another one, Frank Andrew Hoover, was arrested in 2016, after going against a protective order Taylor had issued against him, when he previously tried to contact her, including sending emails to her parents. He was charged again in 2018.

Having people make Taylor feel unsafe is something she has dealt with almost since the beginning of her career, which is why she employs an extensive security team.

“I don’t have security to make myself look cool, or like I have an entourage,” Taylor previously told Vogue. “I have security because there’s a file of stalkers who want to take me home and chain me to a pipe in their basement.”

After Eric serves his time in prison, he will also have three years of federal supervised release.
