Tim McGraw On ‘Standing Room Only’: ‘The Lyrics Hit Me Right Away’

Tim McGraw‘s “Standing Room Only,” is out now. The song, from a forthcoming new album, resonated with McGraw the first time he heard it.

“I’m sort of a song nut, and I listen to songs all the time,” McGraw shares with his record label. “I listen to new songs every day from songwriters, and when I heard this song, the lyrics hit me right away. I mean, it’s just so well written. There’s not a wasted line anywhere in this song. And the melody of it, it was a little different.”

The song says in part, “I wanna live a life, live a life / Like a dollar and the clock on the wall don’t own me / Shine a light, shine a light / Like mama’s front porch when I’m lost and lonely / Start forgiving and start forgetting / Be somebody that’s worth remembering / Live a life so when I die / There’s standing room only.” For McGraw, it

Not only did McGraw know right away that he wanted to record “Standing Room Only,” but it also reminded the father of three of another song he released 19 years ago, and changed the trajectory of his life and career forever.

“I love the perspective of ‘Standing Room Only’ and what it meant,” McGraw explains. “And it’s more about life affirmation, just like ‘Live Like You Were Dying.’ It wasn’t about dying, it was about living. And to me, this song, it’s about going out and living life to the fullest, and trying to be the best person you can be.”

When “Standing Room Only” was released, McGraw said he hoped the message of the song served as an inspiration to others, much as it did for himself.

“For me, this song is so positive and life affirming,” McGraw says of the song. “It caught my ear the first time I heard it. I hope it can be a reminder to live a life filled with gratitude, and not take things for granted. ‘Standing Room Only’ is out now. I hope you love the message as much as I do.”
